Genre and Television proposes a new understanding of television genres as cultural categories, offering a set of in-depth historical and critical examinations to explore five key aspects of television genre: history, industry, audience, text, and genre mixing. Drawing on well-known television programs from Dragnet to The Simpsons, this book provides a new model of genre historiography and illustrates how genres are at work within nearly every facet of television-from policy decisions to production techniques to audience practices. Ultimately, the book argues that through analyzing how television genre operates as a cultural practice, we can better comprehend how television actively shapes our social world.

Genre is central to understanding the industrial context and visual form of television. This new edition of the key textbook on television genre brings together leading international scholars to provide an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the debates, issues and concerns of the field. Structured in eleven sections, The Television Genre Book introduces the concept of 'genre' itself and how it has been understood in television studies, and then addresses the main televisual genres in turn: drama, soap opera, comedy, news, documentary, reality television, children's television, animation and popular entertainment. This third edition is illustrated throughout with case studies of classic and contemporary programming from each genre, ranging from The Simpsons to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and from Monty Python's Flying Circus to Who Wants to be a Millionaire?. It also features new case studies on contemporary shows, including The Only Way Is Essex, Homeland, Game of Thrones, Downton Abbey, Planet Earth, Grey's Anatomy and QVC, and new chapters covering topics such as constructed reality, travelogues, telefantasy, stand-up comedy, the panel show, 24-hour news, Netflix and video on demand.

Thinking Outside the Box brings together some of the best and most challenging scholarship about TV genres, exploring their genesis, their functions and development, and the interaction of disparate genres. The authors argue that genre is a process rather than a static category and that it signifies much about the people who produce and watch the shows. In addition to considering traditional genres such as sitcoms, soap operas, and talk shows, the contributors explore new hybrids, including reality programs, teen-oriented science fiction, and quality dramas, and examine how many of these shows have taken on a global reach. Identifying historical continuities and envisioning possible trends, this is the richest and most current study of how television genres form, operate, and change.

Essay from the year 2004 in the subject Communications - Mass Media, grade: 2.1, University of Central Lancashire, course: Reading the media, language: English, abstract: To understand television programmes and how they are organised, it is important to look at the different kinds of programmes and how they are standing in context with other programmes. Every programme has its own conventions, codes and signs and this is why it is divided in different genres. In this essay I will try to find out, if it makes a difference whether television programmes are subdivided into genres and if it influences the production of a programme and also the consumption of the viewers. The examples used for this discussion are two different television programmes. One is the reality TV show “The Osbournes” which was first broadcasted in 2002 on the music channel “MTV” and than on Channel four; the other one is the news programme “BBC News at ten” which is broadcasted on BBC one. As a second media form I will take the two popular British newspapers “The Sun” a tabloid format newspaper and “The Times” printed as broadsheet format.

The question of how genre is used in relation to television has been widely debated within the study of popular culture with voices like Jason Mitchell arguing that "every aspect of television exhibits a reliance on genre." While his argument was largely correct for the time and his methodical approach to the study of genre indicates a broad definition, it was published before the widespread use of streaming services like Netflix and Hulu. Therefore, his argument fails to address the ways streaming services have changed the use of genre in television. My paper addresses the issue of how genre is changing with special attention to their emerging use as algorithms and their ebbing use as an analytical framework. Specifically, in my project, I will be looking at the Netflix original show The End of the F×××ing World to illustrate how shows created for streaming services play with genre in ways that create television that appears without genre altogether. I will do a semiotic genre analysis, using the first season of The End of the F×××ing World, to show how adhering to one (or even two genres) is no longer the norm, but rather streaming service original shows The question of how genre is used in relation to television has been widely debated within the study of popular culture with voices like Jason Mitchell arguing that "every aspect of television exhibits a reliance on genre." This is a process by which shows integrate five to seven genres to create product that appears without genre when observed wholly. In conclusion this project, by closely examining genre within The End of the F×××ing World, sheds new light on the neglected issue of the changing use of genre in streaming services.

Essay from the year 2008 in the subject Film Science, grade: 1,5, Middlesex University in London, course: Introduction to Television Studies, 10 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: 'Ashes to Ashes' is a BBC produced drama series and a spin-off series of 'Life on Mars'. The last episode of season one has been aired a few weeks ago. Some people may claim 'Ashes to Ashes' is a science fiction series others may say it is a police drama series. This essay will examine if it is maybe a hybrid of several television genres. Therefore it will explain first how a genre is defined and will take Steve Neil's and Graeme Turner's point of view into account. Steve Neil is a professor for Film Studies at Exeter University and author of several books about genre. Graeme Turner is Professor of Cultural Studies and Director of the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland, Australia. Following this discussion this essay will concentrate on 'Ashes to Ashes' and whether it confirms the genre of police series and science-fiction series. In order to confirm this, the essay will compare both genres and show the similarities and differences. In addition, it will argue that 'Ashes to Ashes' is not only a genre hybrid, further, it is a hybrid between series and serial.

This Guide is structured in three parts: an introduction to the core concepts, practices, and terminologies; an exploration of the ideas, issues, and debates that stem from textual analysis, including representation, genre, and ideology; and an introduction to the key theories and critical approaches, including feminist theory, Marxism, structuralism, and auteur theory. Throughout, a range of popular and accessible case studies show textual analysis and film and media theory in practice, including The Matrix: Reloaded, Six Feet Under, Moulin Rouge, and Ken Loach's Sweet Sixteen.

Television In Black And White America written by Alan Nadel and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005 with History categories.
La couverture indique : "Alan Nadel's new book reminds us that most of the images on early TV were decidedly Caucasian and directed at predominantly white audiences. Television did not invent whiteness for America, but it did reinforce it as the norm - particularly during the Cold War years. Nadel now shows just how instrumental it was in constructing a narrow, conservative, and very white vision of America." "During this era, prime-time TV was dominated by "adult Westerns," with heroes like The Rebel's Johnny Yuma reincarnating Southern values and Bonanza's Cartwright family reinforcing the notion of white patriarchy - programs that, Nadel shows, bristled with Cold War messages even as they spoke to the nation's mythology. America had become visually reconfigured as a vast Ponderosa, crisscrossed by concrete highways designed to carry suburban white drivers beyond the moral challenge of racism, racial poverty, and increasingly vocal civil rights demands."
