The solution of the generalized eigenvalue problem is one of the computationally most challenging operations in the field of numerical linear algebra. A well known algorithm for this purpose is the QZ algorithm. Although it has been improved for decades and is available in many software packages by now, its performance is unsatisfying for medium and large scale problems on current computer architectures. In this thesis, a replacement for the QZ algorithm is developed. The design of the new spectral divide and conquer algorithms is oriented towards the capabilities of current computer architectures, including the support for accelerator devices. The thesis describes the co-design of the underlying mathematical ideas and the hardware aspects. Closely connected with the generalized eigenvalue value problem, the solution of Sylvester-like matrix equations is the concern of the second part of this work. Following the co-design approach, introduced in the first part of this thesis, a flexible framework covering (generalized) Sylvester, Lyapunov, and Stein equations is developed. The combination of the new algorithms for the generalized eigenvalue problem and the Sylvester-like equation solves problems within an hour, whose solution took several days incorporating the QZ and the Bartels-Stewart algorithm.

The book is the first book on complex matrix equations including the conjugate of unknown matrices. The study of these conjugate matrix equations is motivated by the investigations on stabilization and model reference tracking control for discrete-time antilinear systems, which are a particular kind of complex system with structure constraints. It proposes useful approaches to obtain iterative solutions or explicit solutions for several types of complex conjugate matrix equation. It observes that there are some significant differences between the real/complex matrix equations and the complex conjugate matrix equations. For example, the solvability of a real Sylvester matrix equation can be characterized by matrix similarity; however, the solvability of the con-Sylvester matrix equation in complex conjugate form is related to the concept of con-similarity. In addition, the new concept of conjugate product for complex polynomial matrices is also proposed in order to establish a unified approach for solving a type of complex matrix equation.

This book focuses on methods to solutions regarding matrix equations: algebraic, periodic, and unilateral Riccati equations, Lyapunov equations, Silvester equations, generalized Silvester equations, and factorization of matrix polynomials in continuous and discrete cases. These equations are used to solve problems of the synthesis of optimal controllers. Also presented is the problem of the synthesis of optimal controllers in the frequency domain when measuring part of the phase coordinates. A general parameterization algorithm is proposed for its solution. The well-known parameterizations (Youla–Jabr–Bongiorno (1976) and Desoer–Liu–Murrau–Saeks (1980)) are demonstrated by us to form a special case of the proposed general parameterization algorithm. The obtained results can be applied to solve various problems in oil production by the gas-lift method and rod pump systems, unmanned aerial vehicles, and walking machines. Each section is illustrated by examples. The MATLAB environment is used for numerical solution of the problems. The book is intended for students and experts in applied mathematics and control systems theory.
