"As Lee so wisely and eloquently cautions, there may be perils along this pathway as well as miraculous discoveries. Do dangers lurk in this new technological approach to nature? May we unwittingly be doing irreparable harm to individuals, not to mention the biosphere? This perceptive author even-handedly assesses the controversies surrounding the perils that may await us as molecular science moves out of the laboratory and into our homes and environment. This fascinating and comprehensive volume shows that the time has come to confront our gene future, because our gene future is now."--Jacket

The livestock sector faces a range of challenges, including climate change, emerging diseases, competition for natural resources and evolving demand for animal-source foods, which is increasing globally, especially in developing countries. Genetic diversity of livestock is a key resource for allowing livestock keepers to address these challenges, but this diversity has been in a state of decline. The diminishing genetic diversity thus represents yet another obstacle for sustainable livestock production. Cryoconservation (i.e. ex situ – in vitro conservation) of genetic resources through gene banking provides one of the most powerful tools governments and other stakeholders have to manage genetic diversity in both the short and long term and thereby provide future generations with the tools to meet the challenges ahead. Gene banking genetic resources fits within the context of the Global Plan of Action for Animal Genetic Resources, which was developed and adopted by FAO Member Nations. Specifically, Strategic Priority 9 of the Global Plan of Action is “Establish or strengthen ex situ conservation programmes” and Strategic Priority 11 urges countries to “Develop approaches and technical standards for conservation. To assist countries in the implementation the Global Plan of Action, FAO worked with experts from around the world to prepare technical guidelines. In 2012 FAO published FAO Guidelines on Cryoconservation of animal genetic resources.Gene banking is a long-term effort that needs to be viewed in terms of decades rather than years, as demonstrated by similar systems for agricultural crops. The responsibility for establishing such resources lies squarely within governments’ roles of providing public goods and food security. Gene banking of animal genetic resources is a technology-intense undertaking and the associated technologies are in a continual state of research and development. The livestock sector also continues to evolve rapidly. Since the development and release of the previous guidelines, numerous changes have taken place. Critical among these is a greater appreciation of the opportunities for actively utilizing cryopreserved material to enhance management of in vivo populations, rather than as simply an “insurance policy” to protect breeds against extinction. This key development has led to further changes in gene bank management. First, interaction with users of the stored material has increased. This in turn has created a need to involve stakeholders more closely in the management of genetic collections and to better monitor and document the processes of gene banking to ensure quality management.

Tools And Genetic Modification Techniques For Enhancing Human Abilities written by Edenilson Brandl and has been published by Edenilson Brandl this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on with Health & Fitness categories.
In the rapidly evolving field of genetic modification, we find ourselves on the cusp of unprecedented opportunities and profound ethical challenges. The power to alter the very fabric of life through genetic engineering has opened new frontiers in science and medicine, offering the potential to enhance human abilities in ways previously confined to science fiction. As we stand at this pivotal moment in history, understanding and navigating the complex landscape of genetic modification techniques is more crucial than ever. This book, Tools and Genetic Modification Techniques for Enhancing Human Abilities, aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of genetic engineering and its applications. It is intended for scientists, researchers, students, and anyone with a keen interest in the potential of genetic modification to reshape our understanding of human potential. We begin with an introduction to the fundamental concepts and historical milestones of genetic modification. From the discovery of DNA and the advent of recombinant DNA technology to the rise of advanced genomic editing tools, we trace the journey of genetic engineering and its transformative impact on science and medicine. The book delves into a variety of genomic editing tools, including CRISPR-Cas9, TALENs, Zinc Finger Nucleases, Base Editing, and Prime Editing. Each of these tools represents a significant leap forward in our ability to modify genes with precision and efficiency. We explore their mechanisms, applications, advantages, limitations, and the ethical and regulatory issues that accompany their use. In addition to exploring the technical aspects of genetic modification, we address its implications for human enhancement. Chapters focus on cognitive and physical enhancements, metabolic improvements, disease resistance, and more. We also examine the broader ethical, social, and regulatory issues associated with these advancements, considering how they might shape our future. As we navigate through topics such as genetic modification for longevity, personalized medicine, and enhancements in areas like immune response, sensory perception, and mental health, we seek to balance scientific innovation with a thoughtful consideration of its societal impacts. The integration of genetic modification with artificial intelligence, the role of genomics in customized drug development, and the potential of these technologies in space travel are just a few examples of the exciting future directions we explore. Each chapter provides a detailed examination of the current state of research, practical applications, and the challenges that lie ahead.

The Encyclopedia of American Literature gathers together 350 essays from over 190 leading scholars on the whole of American literature, from European discovery to the present. At the core of the Encyclopedia lie 250 essays on poets, playwrights, essayists, and novelists. Figures such as Whitman, Melville, Faulkner, Frost, and Morrison are discussed in detail with each examined in the context of his or her times, an assessment of the writer's current reputation, a bibliography of major works, and a list of major critical and biographical works about the writer. Fifty entries on major works such as Moby Dick, Song of Myself, Walden, The Great Gatsby, The Waste Land, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Death of a Salesman, and Beloved place the work in its historical context and offer a range of possibilities with regard to critical approach. The Encyclopedia also contains essays on literary movements, periods, and themes, pulling together a broad range of information and making connections between them. Each entry has its own primary and annotated secondary bibliography, and a system of cross-references helps readers locate information with ease. The Encyclopedia of American Literature is an outstanding reference source for students studying authors, or particular pieces of literature; libraries looking for one comprehensive source; and readers interested in American literature, its authors, and its connection with various areas of study.
