This detailed study of the issues surrounding discrimination against women throughout the history of Buddhism focuses on the foundations and evolution of Buddhist thought. The author, trained as a physicist, became interested in the Buddhist view of women and researched the topic over the course of 10 years. He's also the author of several other works on Buddhism. Here, he concludes from his readings of Buddhist texts that both male and female principles are indispensable for the perfection of personality. Women In Chinese Buddhism written by Jessica Huset Tilton and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2025-11 with Religion categories.

"Tilton examines how cultural, political and economic forces exert pressures on the levels of freedom and equality for female Buddhists within the Buddhist community as well as women's rights within society. The book charts women's spiritual paths over four periods beginning with the Buddha and his revolutionary stance on women, to the creation of a fully ordained female Saçngha in China - which peaks during the Tang dynasty - and finally to its resurgence in the late Qing and early Republic period, ending with its sharp decline to the near extinction during the Mao Zedong years (1949-1976). As the nun and lay communities arise directly from the broader female community, Tilton argues that there is a direct correlation between women's rights issues and those of liberties for Buddhist women within the Saçngha; specifically, women's equality within "this world" as well as their right to achieve liberation from "this world," or saòmsåara. Charting the evolution of Buddhist women in China across multiple centuries, this is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and students of Asian Studies, Buddhist Studies, as well as those interested in the intersection of gender and religion"-- Provided by publisher.

Recent decades have seen a groundswell in the Buddhist world, a transnational agitation for better opportunities for Buddhist women. Many of the main players in the transnational nuns movement self-identify as feminists but other participants in this movement may not know or use the language of feminism. In fact, many ordained Buddhist women say they seek higher ordination so that they might be better Buddhist practitioners, not for the sake of gender equality. Eschewing the backward projection of secular liberal feminist categories, this book describes the basic features of the Buddhist discourse of the female body, held more or less in common across sectarian lines, and still pertinent to ordained Buddhist women today. The textual focus of the study is an early-first-millennium Sanskrit Buddhist work, "Descent into the Womb scripture" or Garbhāvakrānti-sūtra. Drawing out the implications of this text, the author offers innovative arguments about the significance of childbirth and fertility in Buddhism, namely that birth is a master metaphor in Indian Buddhism; that Buddhist gender constructions are centrally shaped by Buddhist birth discourse; and that, by undermining the religious importance of female fertility, the Buddhist construction of an inauspicious, chronically impure, and disgusting femininity constituted a portal to a new, liberated, feminine life for Buddhist monastic women. Thus, this study of the Buddhist discourse of birth is also a genealogy of gender in middle period Indian Buddhism. Offering a new critical perspective on the issues of gender, bodies and suffering, this book will be of interest to an interdisciplinary audience, including researchers in the field of Buddhism, South Asian history and religion, gender and religion, theory and method in the study of religion, and Buddhist medicine.

The demonstrations of monks in Tibet and Myanmar (Burma) in recent times as well as the age-old conflict between a predominantly Buddhist population and a Hindu minority in Sri Lanka raise the question of how the issues of human rights and Buddhism are related. The question applies both to the violation of basic rights in Buddhist countries and to the defence of those rights which are well-grounded in Buddhist teachings. The volume provides academic essays that reflect this up to now rather neglected issue from the point of view of the three main Buddhist traditions, Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. It provides multi-faceted and surprising insights into a rather unlikely relationship.

This collection of spiritual testimonies is committed to the idea that genuine dialogue between men and women that acknowledges the essential fully gendered human aspect of each is the foundation for achieving true liberation of the sexes, and the study looks to the traditions of the five major religions of the world for guidance. Both men and women draw on their own personal experiences to address how the issues of justice and equality are manifested in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, and to search for core teachings within those traditions that would encourage dialogue and thereby promote authentic freedom.

This book surveys both the part women have played in Buddhism historically and what Buddhism might become in its post-patriarchal future. The author completes the Buddhist historical record by discussing women, usually absent from histories of Buddhism, and she provides the first feminist analysis of the major concepts found in Buddhist religion. Gross demonstrates that the core teachings of Buddhism promote gender equity rather than male dominance, despite the often sexist practices found in Buddhist institutions throughout history.
