This report summarizes the in situ, ex situ, and inter situ genetic conservation status of commercial forest tree species in British Columbia that have genetic management and tree improvement programs. These tree species are western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don), coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii (Mirbel) Franco), interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Beissn.) Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla (Raf.) Sarg.), western larch (Larix occidentalis Nutt.), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta ssp. latifolia Engelm. ex S. Wats.), western white pine (Pinus monticola Dougl. ex D. Don), Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) and hybrids, hybrid white spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, P. engelmannii Parry ex Engelm., and hybrids), and yellow-cedar (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis (D. Don) Spach). Based on their in situ, inter situ, and ex situ conservation status, species and species/seed planning unit combinations were assigned priorities based on a set of criteria adapted from those used by national and international agencies. These criteria can be used to allocate resources for additional genetic conservation activities.--Includes text from document.

The primary strategy for long-term conservation of British Columbia's biodiversity is through an extensive network of protected areas (PAs). These parks and ecological reserves have been established in all of the major ecological units within the province. In this document the authors evaluate how well British Columbia's protected areas meet the goal of conserving genetic diversity of all indigenous tree species in all major biogeoclimatic units (zones) in which they occur. They identify the most significant in situ conservation gaps for British Columbia's approximately 50 native tree species and provide information to direct field verification of actual protection levels.--Document.
