Biotechnology Applications in Forestry: Forest Microbiology, Volume Four in the Forest Microbiology series, is a comprehensive exploration of harnessing the unique attributes of the microbes in the forest biome and their tree hosts. The book introduces the basics of genomics, applied bioinformatics and next generation sequencing, providing a firm foundation before moving to specific approach, application and use chapters. Further sections explore opportunities through the use of genetics to expand or improve on many of these positive attributes of forest trees and associated organisms, including adaptation to climate change as well as resilience to biotic and abiotic stressors.Novel techniques and current advances in the application of modern biotechniques in tree health protection, mushroom technology, biological control, biochar, bioenergy, Isolate & strain selection, metabolic engineering and commercial application relevant for forest ecosystem are also addressed. - Outlines novel approaches in the use of fungi or bacteria for biocontrol of insect pests and invasive plant species - Highlights the many functions and uses of forest microbes as biofertilizers, in soil fertility, and in bioremediation, including phytoremediation - Addresses major industrial and biotechnological applications of forest microbes

This book is intended to provide information on fundamental genetic processes in tropical forests. It is based on lecture notes by the authors prepared for po- graduate students, mainly from tropical countries, of the M.Sc. course “Tropical and International Forestry”at the Faculty of Forest Sciences and Forest Ecology, Georg August University Göttingen, Germany. The intended readership is s- dents, researchers and practitioners interested in the genetic variation of species, in particular forest trees, living in complex forest ecosystems in the tropics. Particular emphasis is placed on the human impact on forest genetic resources in the tropics. Readers should be familiar with basics of classical and molecular genetics such as the structure and function of DNA (double-helix structure, repli- tion), polypeptide synthesis (transcription and translation), and the transm- sion of genetic information during sexual reproduction (“Mendel’s rules”). This knowledge is easily available from recently published genetics textbooks; we recommend the book by Griffiths et al. (2000). The development of biochemical and molecular marker techniques and their application to species of tropical forests have greatly improved our kno- edge of genetic variation patterns of “wild”plants in the tropics during the last two decades. Many examples in this book are based on gene marker techniques.

Effective management of forest genetic resources is a key element in future forest conservation. Genetic diversity is essential for both the long-term stability and the short-term productivity of forest ecosystems. Hence there is a great need for information on forest conservation genetics. The book consists of 22 chapters and is divided into five parts, integrating genetic, ecological and socioeconomic information. It also includes, as a CD-ROM, the population genetics software package POPGENE. Contributors include international authorities from the USA and Canada, Europe, South-East Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Forest management must be sustainable not only in ecological, economic and social, but also genetic terms. Many forest managers are advocating and developing management strategies that give priority to conserving genetic diversity within production systems, or that recognise the importance of genetic considerations in achieving sustainable management. Forest Conservation Genetics draws together much previously uncollected information relevant to managing and conserving forests. The content emphasises the importance of conserving genetic diversity in achieving sustainable management. Each chapter is written by a leading expert and has been peer reviewed. Readers without a background in genetics will find the logical sequence of topics allows easy understanding of the principles involved and how those principles may impact on day-to-day forest planning and management decisions. The book is primarily aimed at undergraduate students of biology, ecology, forestry, and graduate students of forest genetics, resource management policy and/or conservation biology. It will prove useful for those teaching courses in these fields and as such help to increase the awareness of genetic factors in conservation and sustainable management, in both temperate and tropical regions.
