Prepared by the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. This TCLEE Monograph covers the entire range of fire following earthquake (FFE) issues, from historical fires to 20th-century fires in Kobe, San Francisco, Oakland, Berkeley, and Northridge. FFE has the potential of causing catastrophic losses in the United States, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and other seismically active countries with wood houses. This comprehensive book on FFE and urban conflagrations provides state-of-the-practice insight on unique issues, such as large diameter flex hose applications by fire and water departments. Topics include: History of past fires; Computer modeling of fire spread in the post-earthquake urban environment; Concurrent damage and fire impacts for water, power gas, communication and transportation systems; Examples of reliable water systems built or designed in San Francisco, Vancouver, Berkeley, and Kyoto; Use of large diameter (5 in.) and ultralarge diameter (12 in.) flex hose for fire fighting and water restoration; and Cost-effectiveness of various FFE mitigation strategies, with a detailed benefit-cost model. Water utility engineers, fire fighting professionals, and emergency response planners will benefit from reading this book.

Factors And Interactions Contributing To The Risk Of Fire Following Earthquake For Urban Southern California written by William T. Schellhous and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017 with categories.
Earthquakes pose both primary and secondary threats to human life, health, and property. Primary threats include building collapse, landslide, and falling objects. Secondary threats may include tsunamis or fires. Fire following earthquake is a secondary earthquake risk that threatens urban populations in seismically active areas, such as Southern California. The damage from previous post-earthquake fires has far exceeded the damage from the earthquakes themselves.

History has shown that re has been a signicant cause of deaths and damage following major earthquakes. As such, the assessment of structures under re following earthquake is a concern for the engineering community. Previous studies have mainly investigated the structural response of buildings to re following earthquake by performing separate seismic analysis and thermal stress analysis. The main problem with such a procedure is that moving between separate analyses requires over simplistic assumptions in state of structural system and components following the seismic analysis. The main goal of this work is therefore to develop a integrated analysis platform and use it to investigate the structural level response of steel structures to major earthquakes and their cascading events. The developed analysis platform is able to simulate the response of structures to cyclic loading, earthquakes, re, and various sequences thereof while considering inelasticity in the material and structural elements at all phases of the sequence. To this end, new loading, material and analysis modules are implemented into the analysis platform to make it possible to perform both thermal stress analysis and sequential analysis including thermal and mechanical loading. Various types of loads including force, displacement, acceleration and temperature are added to the tool using the implemented loading modules. A temperature-dependent material model is developed and implemented for steel and validated at the structural-level by comparison with experimental observations reported in the literature. Both the plastic strain eects and strain reversal during the cooling phase of re is taken into account in the material model. Including the plastic strain eects enables the model to be used also for sequential analysis of structures where it begins from non-zero initial strain conditions. Residual deformations at the end of each seismic analysis are identied by adding a dynamic analysis with modied Newmark coecients to the sequential analysis. The residual deformations serve as initial conditions for the next thermal stress analysis or seismic analysis. The developed analysis platform is utilized for sequential analysis of a moment resisting steel frame subjected to cyclic loading with dierent levels followed by various re scenarios. The performance of the frame with previous inelastic demand imposed by cyclic loading and re is then assessed under another cyclic loading with the same level as the rst one. A parametric study is also performed to assess the structural-level response of the selected frame to various re scenarios in combination with a set of earthquake ground motion records selected for dierent hazard levels. It is observed that both the hazard levels and re scenarios can have signicant impacts on the structural response of the frame to re following earthquake.
