Sustainable fashion has gained immense traction in the past decade. While American and Western European initiatives are often credited with being the pioneers of this relatively new segment of the industry, it is important to note that they are not the only ones asking the tough questions, and providing innovative answers on the topic. Eastern Central Europe is full of educators, activists, programs and initiatives that are actively addressing and working with sustainable fashion, yet lack a unified platform on which to collaborate and advance their goals. A cumulative platform was warranted to showcase the diversity of ideas the Visegrad (V4) region has to offer. Based on a 3-day conference that was organized in September 2021 by Fashion Forward, a New York-based not-for-profit think tank, and funded by the prestigious Visegrad Fund, this volume was conceived to present the most pioneering civil society advocacy groups and universities of the region. Representing 8 partner organizations— 4 universities, and each of the V4 nations’ respective Fashion Revolution chapters— conference delegates shared their experience, insights, and knowledge with each other and the public in an accessible, open forum in which active participation and communication were highly valued and encouraged. Following the conference’s format, this volume is divided into three sections: “Sustainability & Accountability,” “Culture & Society,” and “Education & Training.” Interspersed between the partners’ delegates’ essays are “Worlds,” short fictional scenarios that imagine alternative realities around the concept of sustainable dress and fashion. These Worlds were written by delegates in a workshop hosted by Fashion Fictions, a speculative, prototyping fashion project based in the U.K. It is our hope that this publication provides a comprehensive foundation on which to further explore and expand the notion of sustainable fashion in the Visegrad region.

"Fashion Forward: The Evolution of Modern Dresses" invites readers into a mesmerizing journey through the history, artistry, and cultural significance of modern dresses. In this lavishly illustrated book, we delve deep into the evolution of dresses as more than just garments but as powerful expressions of identity, creativity, and societal change. The book begins by tracing the roots of modern dresses, exploring their origins in ancient civilizations and their evolution through different historical periods. From the draped silhouettes of ancient Greece to the elaborate court gowns of the Renaissance, each era is brought to life through vivid descriptions, historical anecdotes, and stunning visuals that capture the essence of the times. As we progress through the chapters, we encounter iconic designs that have left an indelible mark on fashion history. The timeless elegance of the Little Black Dress, the revolutionary New Look silhouette, the daring Mini Dress of the 1960s, and the ethereal Slip Dress of the 1990s are just a few examples of the dresses that defined their respective eras and continue to inspire designers today. One of the book's highlights is its exploration of the cultural and societal influences that shape dress styles. We delve into the role of fashion capitals like Paris, Milan, New York, and Tokyo in driving trends, fostering creativity, and setting the global fashion agenda. Each city's unique aesthetic, heritage, and influence on modern dress culture are vividly portrayed, offering readers a comprehensive understanding of the global fashion landscape. The book also delves into the business side of fashion, examining the economic forces, supply chain dynamics, and technological innovations that drive the industry forward. From sustainability initiatives and ethical practices to digital transformation and tech integration, readers gain valuable insights into the evolving business models and trends shaping the future of fashion. Throughout "Fashion Forward," readers are treated to a visual feast of exquisite dresses, archival photographs, runway images, and sketches that showcase the artistry and craftsmanship behind modern dress design. Quotes and interviews from renowned designers, fashion historians, and industry experts provide valuable perspectives and insider knowledge, making this book a treasure trove of information for fashion enthusiasts and professionals alike. But "Fashion Forward" is more than just a historical or educational journey—it's a celebration of creativity, diversity, and self-expression through clothing. The book celebrates the democratization of fashion, the rise of street style, and the growing influence of social media and digital platforms in shaping trends and amplifying voices from diverse communities. In its concluding chapters, "Fashion Forward" looks towards the future of fashion, exploring trends, projections, and innovations that promise to redefine modern dress culture. From sustainable practices and inclusivity initiatives to tech-driven personalization and collaborative partnerships, the book paints a vibrant picture of an industry embracing change and creativity.
