Excellence vs Equality: Can Society Achieve Both Goals? explores the issues faced by societies attempting to preserve democratic ideals and the common good in an era of incommensurate wealth and opportunity. As differences in advantage and ability affect the relationships between institutions and the people who comprise them, the book argues that political and social compromise is needed to prevent economic inequality from threatening the well-being and mobility of the less able and less fortunate. Topics include globalization, technology, innovation, talent and meritocracy, higher education, big business, labor unions, and social justice within educational and workplace settings. The author raises perennial and ever-prescient questions regarding how to balance excellence and equality, and how to reduce inequality around the world.

Based on the EU-funded project RESET (Redesigning Equality and Scientific Excellence Together) and written by members of seven European partner universities representing different disciplines, this book combines theory and practice to discuss and reflect on the concept of scientific excellence within higher education. It considers the pitfalls and the need to revisit an understanding of inclusivity by asking how scientific excellence and professional equality can be made compatible in practice. Split into three key sections, the first part of the book is devoted to the question of scientific excellence in relation to existing gender inequalities within universities. It includes a discussion on the objectivity of scientific excellence based on feminist literature devoted to the reproduction of inequalities in universities and data collected during the RESET project. The second part is dedicated to the actions taken to achieve more inclusive excellence and the third part finishes by focussing on training on gender and diversity issues and the resistance that such workshops generate. The book offers a comprehensive guide to fostering an academic culture that aligns scientific excellence with equality, diversity, and inclusion, providing researchers and decision-makers alike with practical tools for achieving inclusive excellence within European universities, while at the same time knowing how to deal with difficulties and resistance. This book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

How a nation treats its poor and “slow runners” (including its sick, elderly, and disabled) defines that society. Written by a leading education scholar, this book draws on Ornstein’s years of experience in researching and writing about schools, education, and the workplace. Ornstein’s new book focuses on those who run an “average race” or a “slow race” in life and discusses what provisions, safety nets, and safeguards a society can provide for those who are at the bottom half or left side of the bell curve, even for those who fall slightly on the right side. The book is about how we treat those with less talent and less ability in context with those who are strong and/or run a “swift race,” to address the inevitable question: can a society achieve both excellence and equality?

From The Campus written by Sol Cohen and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1989-11-03 with Education categories.

This important new book assembles internationally prominent school-of-education faculty and researchers to provide valuable perspectives on the school reform or excellence movement. From the Campus addresses timely issues in education in a scholarly yet easy-to-read style. The contributors represent a wide variety of disciplines including comparative and international education, history, sociology, political science, curriculum theory, testing and evaluation, school administration, special education and more. They confront the most controversial issues in education of our time; equity and excellence, at-risk children, the education of language-minority students, the governance of education, parental choice, and the importance of home, family, and elementary and preschool education. This book broadens the scope of the debate over school reform to include concerns that the current enthusiasm for excellence will erode earlier gains for equality, and that the reform movement is not paying enough attention to at-risk and disadvantaged children. The contributors examine the need for radical restructuring of schools in order to combine excellence with equality. From the Campus offers insight, values, and pedagogical expertise from education scholars enabling the reader to be well-informed in the school reform debate. Parents, school board members, policy makers, school administrators, teachers, and education students will find From the Campus a source of stimulating ideas as well as a valuable resource.
