Prior to the early 1990s the term 'evolutionary computing' (EC) would have meant little to most practising engineers unless they had a particular interest in emerging computing technologies or were part of an organisation with significant in-house research activities. It was around this time that the first tentative utilisation of relatively simple evolutionary algorithms within engineering design began to emerge in the UK The potential was rapidly recognised especially within the aerospace sector with both Rolls Royce and British Aerospace taking a serious interest while in the USA General Electric had already developed a suite of optimisation software which included evolutionary and adaptiv,e search algorithms. Considering that the technologies were already twenty-plus years old at this point the long gestation period is perhaps indicative of the problems associated with their real-world implementation. Engineering application was evident as early as the mid-sixties when the founders of the various techniques achieved some success with computing resources that had difficulty coping with the population-based search characteristics of the evolutionary algorithms. Unlike more conventional, deterministic optimisation procedures, evolutionary algorithms search from a population of possible solutions which evolve over many generations. This largely stochastic process demands serious computing capability especially where objective functions involve complex iterative mathematical procedures.

The Adaptive Computing in Design and Manufacture Conference series is now in its tenth year and has become a well-established, application-oriented meeting recognised by several UK Engineering Institutions and the International Society of Genetic and Evolutionary Computing. The main theme of the conference again relates to the integration of evolutionary and adaptive computing technologies with design and manufacturing processes whilst also taking into account complementary advanced computing technologies. Evolutionary and adaptive computing techniques continue to increase their penetration of industrial and commercial practice as their powerful search, exploration and optimisation capabilities become ever more apparent. The last two years have seen a very significant increase in the development of commercial software tools utilising adaptive computing technologies and the emergence of related commercial research and consultancy organisations supporting the introduction of best practice in terms of industrial utilisation. Adaptive Computing in Design and Manufacture V is comprised of selected papers that cover a diverse set of industrial application areas including: engineering design and design environments, manufacturing process design, scheduling and control, electronic circuit design, fault detection. Various aspects of search and optimisation such as multi-objective and constrained optimisation are also investigated in the context of integration with industrial processes. In addition to evolutionary computing techniques, both neural-net and agent-based technologies play a role in a number of contributions. This collection of papers will be of particular interest to both industrial researchers and practitioners in addition to the academic research communities of engineering, operational research and computer science.

The Adaptive Computing in Design and Manufacture conference series has become a well-established, largely application-oriented meeting recognised by several UK Engineering Institutions and the International Society of Genetic and Evolutionary Computing. The main theme of the series relates to the integration of evolutionary and adaptive computing technologies with design and manufacturing processes whilst also taking into account complementary advanced computing technologies. Evolutionary and adaptive computing techniques continue to increase their penetration of industrial and commercial practice as awareness of their powerful search, exploration and optimisation capabilities becomes ever more prevalent, and increasing desk-top computational capability renders stochastic population-based search a far more viable proposition. There has been a significant increase in the development and integration of commercial software tools utilising adaptive computing technologies and the emergence of related commercial research and consultancy organisations supporting the introduction of best practice in terms of industrial utilisation. The book is comprised of selected papers that cover a diverse set of industrial application areas including engineering design and design environments and manufacturing process design, scheduling and control. Various aspects of search, exploration and optimisation are investigated in the context of integration with industrial processes including multi-objective and constraint satisfaction, development and utilization of meta-models, algorithm and strategy development and human-centric evolutionary approaches. The role of agent-based and neural net technologies in terms of supporting search processes and providing an alternative simulation environment is also explored. This collection of papers will be of particular interest to both industrial researchers and practitioners in addition to the academic research communities across engineering, operational research and computer science.

The third evolutionary I adaptive computing conference organised by the Plymouth Engineering Design Centre (PEDC) at the University of Plymouth again explores the utility of various adaptive search algorithms and complementary computational intelligence techniques within the engineering design and manufacturing domains. The intention is to investigate strategies and techniques that are of benefit not only as component I system optimisers but also as exploratory design tools capable of supporting the differing requirements of conceptual, embodiment and detailed design whilst taking into account the many manufacturing criteria influencing design direction. Interest in the integration of adaptive computing technologies with engineering has been rapidly increasing in recent years as practical examples illustrating their potential relating to system performance and design process efficiency have become more apparent. This is in addition to the realisation of significant commercial benefits from the application of evolutionary planning and scheduling strategies. The development of this conference series from annual PEDC one day workshops to the biennial 'Adaptive Computing in Engineering Design and Control' conference and this year's event reflects this growth in both academic and industrial interest. The name change to include manufacture relates to a desire to increase cover of integrated product development aspects, facility layout and scheduling in addition to process I machine control.

Optimization in Industry comprises a collection of papers presented at the third US United Engineering Foundation's 'Optimization in Industry' Conference. The main thrust of this, the third conference of the series is related to engineering optimization including both manufacture and parametric design. The papers included explore the relationships between well-established deterministic optimization methods and the emerging stochastic and mainly population-based search and optimization algorithms. A mix of approaches across a wide range of engineering disciplines is included. It illustrates the manner in which various techniques can be utilised either in a stand-alone manner or within hybrid systems to give best performance in terms of optimal design and computational efficiency. The papers span scientific, application, awareness/information dissemination and industrial requirements areas. They provide information on available search and optimization techniques and their application to specific design problems and across the field of manufacturing generally. Papers identifying and dealing with problems of incorporating novel optimization techniques within day-to-day design practice and industrial software requirements are also included. The book will thus be of interest to both the industrial and academic communities.

Evolutionary Algorithms in Engineering and Computer Science Edited by K. Miettinen, University of Jyväskylä, Finland M. M. Mäkelä, University of Jyväskylä, Finland P. Neittaanmäki, University of Jyväskylä, Finland J. Périaux, Dassault Aviation, France What is Evolutionary Computing? Based on the genetic message encoded in DNA, and digitalized algorithms inspired by the Darwinian framework of evolution by natural selection, Evolutionary Computing is one of the most important information technologies of our times. Evolutionary algorithms encompass all adaptive and computational models of natural evolutionary systems - genetic algorithms, evolution strategies, evolutionary programming and genetic programming. In addition, they work well in the search for global solutions to optimization problems, allowing the production of optimization software that is robust and easy to implement. Furthermore, these algorithms can easily be hybridized with traditional optimization techniques. This book presents state-of-the-art lectures delivered by international academic and industrial experts in the field of evolutionary computing. It bridges artificial intelligence and scientific computing with a particular emphasis on real-life problems encountered in application-oriented sectors, such as aerospace, electronics, telecommunications, energy and economics. This rapidly growing field, with its deep understanding and assesssment of complex problems in current practice, provides an effective, modern engineering tool. This book will therefore be of significant interest and value to all postgraduates, research scientists and practitioners facing complex optimization problems.

Many design optimization problems are of a very complex nature and quite hard to solve by conventional optimization techniques. Genetic and evolutionary algorithms have recently received considerable attention because of their potential of being a very effective design optimization technique. The book starts with an introduction to design optimization which is followed by a description of genetic and evolutionary algorithms. Then the advanced evolutionary algorithm techniques are provided. These techniques are used in the single and multicriteria optimization methods described in this book. Finally three real-life design optimization problems are formulated and solved by means of these methods. The book is designed as a self-study guide for researchers and students in all engineering departments, especially in mechanical, civil and industrial engineering. The book may also be useful as a comprehensive text for operations researchers, artifical intelligence researchers.
