This Research Topic is the second volume of the Research Topic 'How Children Learn from Parents and Parenting Others in Formal and Informal Settings: International and Cultural Perspectives'. Please see the first volume here​. For several decades, parent-child cognitive interaction researchers have acknowledged that children learn cognitive skills in the context of their social and early environments. These cognitive skills are often imparted to the children by parents or parenting others in formal or informal settings. Thus for example, such informal settings as dinner table conversations, walks through grocery stores, museums, or neighborhoods become rich laboratories for children to learn varied cognitive skills ranging from numeracy, concepts, and language. The way in which those learning opportunities are provided by parents, structured by parents and scaffolded by parents may well vary depending on culture, and other socio-demographic variables; and may well vary depending on formal or informal settings. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together scholarship from both global north and global south contexts which explores how children learn via parental involvement in formal and informal settings. To this end, we are soliciting manuscripts from researchers which focus on examining the strategies that parents use as they engage their children in learning interactions; address how they scaffold those interactions; and consider how children participate in those interaction and move beyond laboratory observations to more naturalistic contexts for children learning through parent interaction. Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management As the editors of this volume we are very happy to publish a selection of the papers that were presented at the eighth Conference of Working Group 3.7 of the International Federation for Information Processing which was held in July 2008. The focus of Working Group 3.7 is on ITEM: Information Technology in Educational Management (for more information, please visit our website http://item.wceruw.org/), and the theme of its 2008 conference was on the Evolution of Information Technology in Educational Management. Our Working Group started its activities (officially we were not an IFIP Working Group at that time) in 1994 in Israel, so it made sense to look at how ITEM has evolved over the years and to reflect on what its future may be. The conference took place in Darwin (northern Australia) which even during the Australian winter is a very pleasant location for having a conference. The town of Darwin was given its name by the Captain of the Beagle (the ship on which Darwin travelled when he made the investigations on which he based his Theory of Evolution) who came to the area and named the town after the giant of science he admired.

A novel, interdisciplinary exploration of the relative contributions of rigidity and flexibility in the adoption, maintenance, and evolution of technical traditions. Techniques can either be used in rigid, stereotypical ways or in flexibly adaptive ways, or in some combination of the two. The Evolution of Techniques, edited by Mathieu Charbonneau, addresses the impacts of both flexibility and rigidity on how techniques are used, transformed, and reconstructed, at varying social and temporal scales. The multidisciplinary contributors demonstrate the important role of the varied learning contexts and social configurations involved in the transmission, use, and evolution of techniques. They explore the diversity of cognitive, behavioral, sociocultural, and ecological mechanisms that promote and constrain technical flexibility and rigidity, proposing a deeper picture of the enablers of, and obstacles to, technical transmission and change. In line with the extended evolutionary synthesis, the book proposes a more inclusive and materially grounded conception of technical evolution in terms of promiscuous, dynamic, and multidirectional causal processes. Offering new evidence and novel theoretical perspectives, the contributors deploy a diversity of methods, including ethnographies, field and laboratory experiments, cladistics and phylogenetic tree building, historiography, and philosophical analysis. Examples of the wide range of topics covered include field experiments with potters from five cultures, stability and change in Paleolithic toolmaking, why children lack flexibility when making tools, and cultural techniques in nonhuman animals.
