In order to meld the facts of organic diversity with the continuity of the evolutionary process, this volume details the diversity of theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches currently employed by primate evolutionary biologists and paleontologists. Specific coverage includes: species concepts and their role in evolutionary theory, the speciation process and the biology of species differences among living primates, and the problems of species recognition in the primate fossil record.

The Evolution Of Cultural Diversity written by Ruth Mace and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-09-16 with Social Science categories.
Virtually all aspects of human behavior show enormous variation both within and between cultural groups, including material culture, social organization and language. Thousands of distinct cultural groups exist: about 6,000 languages are spoken today, and it is thought that a far greater number of languages existed in the past but became extinct. Using a Darwinian approach, this book seeks to explain this rich cultural variation. There are a number of theoretical reasons to believe that cultural diversification might be tree-like, that is phylogenetic: material and non-material culture is clearly inherited by descendants, there is descent with modification, and languages appear to be hierarchically related. There are also a number of theoretical reasons to believe that cultural evolution is not tree-like: cultural inheritance is not Mendelian and can indeed be vertical, horizontal or oblique, evidence of borrowing abounds, cultures are not necessarily biological populations and can be transient and complex. Here, for the first time, this title tackles these questions of cultural evolution empirically and quantitatively, using a range of case studies from Africa, the Pacific, Europe, Asia and America. A range of powerful theoretical tools developed in evolutionary biology is used to test detailed hypotheses about historical patterns and adaptive functions in cultural evolution. Evidence is amassed from archaeological, linguist and cultural datasets, from both recent and historical or pre-historical time periods. A unifying theme is that the phylogenetic approach is a useful and powerful framework, both for describing the evolutionary history of these traits, and also for testing adaptive hypotheses about their evolution and co-evolution. Contributors include archaeologists, anthropologists, evolutionary biologists and linguists, and this book will be of great interest to all those involved in these areas.

This volume is dedicated to Professor Greta A. Fryxell in recognition of her long and distinguished career in the taxonomy and ecology of phytoplankton, especially the diatoms, and the considerable influence she has had on all those who have interacted with her and as a mentor of young scientists. The papers were contributed by Fryxell's collaborators, colleagues, students and her children.

th Welcome to the Proceedings of WISE 2010 — the 11 International Conference on Web Information Systems Engineering. This year, WISE returned to the place where the inaugural conference was held in 2000, Hong Kong. WISE has also been held in: 2001 Kyoto (Japan), 2002 Singapore, 2003 Rome (Italy), 2004 Brisbane (Australia), 2005 New York (USA), 2006 Wuhan (China), 2007 Nancy (France), 2008 Auckland (New Zealand), and 2009 Poznan (Poland). Continuing its trend, this year’s WISE provided a forum for engineers and scientists to present their latest findings in Web-related technologies and solutions. The submitted contributions address challenging issues in Web services, search, modeling, recommendation and data mining, as well as keyword search, social network analysis, query languages, and information retrieval and extraction. This year, WISE received 170 submissions from 25 countries, including Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Greece, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Japan, The Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UK, and the USA. After a thorough reviewing process, 32 papers were selected for presentation as full papers – the acceptance rate was 18.8%. In addition, 19 papers were selected for presentation as short papers, yielding an overall acceptance rate of 30%.

It is not uncommon to see in major areas of research concerned with science that historical studies are accompanied by the rise of complementary or contradictory historiographies. With time, it seems, scholars discover new approaches to study topics, thus questioning old concepts, traditions, periodizations and historical labels. Apparently, this has not been the case in evolutionary thought. In that area, the main historiographic labels such as Darwinian Revolution, Eclipse of Darwinism, and Modern Synthesis have been in place and largely uncontested for about 50 years. Such labels seem to work as irrefutable, and often hidden, premises of many historical reconstructions, philosophical analyses, and scientific conceptualizations. This volume aims to move beyond this state of affair, opening new thinking avenues by revisiting the traditional historiography and laying the groundwork for establishing a “new historiography” that considers the intertwined threads that compose evolutionary biology. Notably, evolutionary studies seem to have been marked by the tension between unification attempts and the proliferation of approaches, methodologies, and styles of thinking. As the contributors to this volume illustrate, research traditions branched off throughout the history of evolutionary thought, before and after Charles Darwin. The resulting complexity challenges traditional thinking categories, throwing a somewhat different light on a more recent label like the Extended Evolutionary Synthesis. More than 40 years after the now classic, The Evolutionary Synthesis: Perspectives on the Unification of Biology (1980), edited by Ernst Mayr and William Provine, the contributors to this volume aim to reevaluate where evolutionary biology stands today.
