A two-day seminar on the future of publishing by scientific and technical societies, arranged by the Commission of the European Communities, with the European Science Foundation as co-sponsor, was held in Luxembourg in April 1978. European scientists and technologists, officials of learned societies, librarians, journal editors and publishers discussed the present state of learned society publishing in Europe, methods by which the efficiency of such publishing might be improved, and ways in which increased international cooperation might be beneficial. These proceedings contain the texts of the seventeen presented papers, together with summaries of the discussions and a synthesis of the recommendations put forward during the seminar. Most of the recommendations concern proposals for action which might be taken in the framework of the European Community.
