This textbook presents the foundations of tensor calculus and the elements of tensor analysis, in addition to considering numerous applications of tensors to geometry, mechanics and physics. While developing tensor calculus, the authors emphasize its relationship with linear algebra. Necessary notions and theorems of linear algebra are introduced and proved in connection with the construction of the apparatus of tensor calculus; prior knowledge is not assumed. For simplicity and to enable the reader to visualize concepts more clearly, all exposition is conducted in three-dimensional space. The principal feature of the book is that the authors use mainly orthogonal tensors, since such tensors are important in applications to physics and engineering. All notions introduced in the book, and also the obtained results, are illustrated with numerous examples discussed in the text. Each section of the book presents problems (a total over 300 problems are given). Complete coverage of fl uid mechanics for engineering applications This comprehensive volume leads you from essential fluid mechanics concepts through to practical engineering applications. After an overview of tensor analysis, the book discusses the kinematics of flow motion and the conservation laws of fluid mechanics and thermodynamics. Detailed information on inviscid and viscous flows is followed by four chapters dealing with viscous flow. Treatment of viscous flow starts with the laminar flow, explains in detail the laminar turbulent transition, and prepares you to fully understand the basics of turbulent flow, its modeling, and applications to several engineering cases. All conservation laws, their derivatives, and related equations in the book are written in coordinate invariant forms. This allows you to follow step-by-step mathematical manipulations and arrive at the index notation and the component decomposition. Challenging problems and projects at the end of each chapter focus on real-world engineering applications. This book serves as both a fundamentals text for graduate students and a professional guide for working engineers. APPLIED FLUID MECHANICS FOR ENGINEERS COVERS: Vector and tensor analysis, applications to fluid mechanics Kinematics of fluid motion Differential balances in fluid mechanics Integral balances in fluid mechanics Inviscid potential flows Viscous laminar flow Laminar-turbulent transition Turbulent flow, modeling Free turbulent flow Boundary layer theory Compressible flow Flow measurement techniques, calibration

Continuum Mechanics Of Electromagnetic Solids written by G.A. Maugin and has been published by North Holland this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1988-03 with Science categories.

This volume is a rigorous cross-disciplinary theoretical treatment of electromechanical and magnetomechanical interactions in elastic solids. Using the modern style of continuum thermomechanics (but without excessive formalism) it starts from basic principles of mechanics and electromagnetism, and goes on to unify these two fields in a common framework. It treats linear and nonlinear static and dynamic problems in a variety of elastic solids such as piezoelectrics, electricity conductors, ferromagnets, ferroelectrics, ionic crystals and ceramics. Chapters 1-3 are introductory, describing the essential properties of electromagnetic solids, the essentials of the thermomechanics of continua, and the general equations that govern the electrodynamics of nonlinear continua in the nonrelativistic framework (e.g. Maxwell's equations, the fundamental balance laws of continuum mechanics, basic thermodynamical inequalities for electromagnetic continua, jump relations for studying the propagation of shock waves, nonlinear constitutive equations for large classes of materials). The remainder of the text presents in detail special cases, applications, solved problems, and more complex schemes of electromagnetic matter. Chapters 4 and 5 examine material schemes whose description relies on the above-mentioned equations. Chapters 6 and 7 are more advanced, reporting on recent progress in the field.Suitable for graduate teaching, the volume will also be useful to research workers and engineers in the field of electromagnetomechanical interactions, and to those interested in the basic principles, mathematical developments and applications of electroelasticity and magnetoelasticity in a variety of solid materials, such as crystals, polycrystals, compounds and alloys.
