Sumbangan etnosains dan etnomatematik di Alam Melayu berakar umbi bersama sejarah dan budaya yang membentuk acuan ilmu yang penuh dengan sistem nilai tempatan dan serantau. Apabila rantau Melayu terjajah oleh kolonialisme Barat, maka penulisan sejarah telah berubah paradigma daripada rantau yang mempunyai tamadun yang agung kepada rantau jajahan yang menjulang tinggi budaya Barat yang memisahkan ilmu daripada nilai. Ilmu tradisi umat Melayu terpinggir dalam penulisan acuan kolonialisme, kerana secara beransur-ansur penjajahan bukan sahaja berlaku terhadap fizikal dan geografi tetapi juga sejarah, pemikiran dan minda. Ilmu yang berteraskan sains dan matematik yang lahir daripada budaya Melayu-Islam seperti mantik, penghujahan, pemikiran kefalsafahan, perdebatan sufisme, pelayaran, seni perubatan, pengiraan takwim, kalendar dan musim, seni bina, retorik dan ketatabahasaan, pancalogam, persenjataan, tenunan dan warisan yang lain, semakin terpinggir dalam penulisan umat Melayu. Pendokumentasian yang dilakukan penjajah diwarnakan oleh sistem nilai mereka di bawah paradigma kolonialisme, yang lebih memetik aspek khurafat atau kelemahan berbanding pemikiran mantik yang lebih saintifik. Hingga kini, keagungan pemikiran etnosains dan etnomatematik Melayu masih tersorok dalam lipatan sejarah, Maka, menerusi tulisan beberapa tokoh ilmuwan tempatan, sebahagian aspek tersebut dihuraikan dalam buku ini, sebagai percubaan pentakrifan domain kajian dan diharapkan akan menjadi bidang yang penting dalam epistemologi etnografi Melayu pada masa akan datang.
