"When Dana Gioia's essay "Can Poetry Matter?" appeared in the Atlantic in 1991, it sparked a firestorm of debate and discussion over the role of the poet in today's world - a dialogue in which Gioia participated on radio, television, and in print. One of the more stimulating and provocative figures on our literary horizon, and the author of two widely praised books of poems, Gioia is also an essayist of wide renown." "This collection of essays demonstrates that Gioia's talents do not lie in the area of controversy alone. Can Poetry Matter? is an old-fashioned sort of literary book, part literary criticism, part social commentary, and part plain good reading. Addressing such subjects as the poet as businessman and New Formalism as the real avant-garde, it also includes pieces on the life and work of such diverse figures as Robinson Jeffers, Weldon Kees, Robert Bly, and Wallace Stevens." "In an age when literary discourse often seems either bleached of any real content or academic to the point of inaccessibility, the essays in Can Poetry Matter? are certain to educate, provoke, and, perhaps most of all, delight readers. They also establish Dana Gioia as one of the foremost cultural observers of his generation."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

The greatest poets in history have endured because their expressed visions have helped us see and feel those things that are permanently true of the human condition. In our era when so much of what passes for poetry is really sociology, ideology, rhetoric or mere wordplay, it is well to be reminded of the fact that great poetry is more than that. Whether it inspires insight or wonder, visionary poetry is more than a different use of language. It is another language--a language that always manages to outlive its authors, its circumstances and the time of its creation. Poems come into existence out of absolute and unavoidable and largely inexplicable necessity. They are ongoing presences, and ongoing presences have no past tense because they always exist in the now. In this sense, Ezra Pound noted, all literature--if it is literature at all--is contemporary. "Each of the essays in this book deals with some aspect of poetry's visionary nature--its awe-inspiring impact; its reliance upon feeling as being more dependable a form of knowledge than the conclusions of science or discursive reason; its capacity to convey the mysterious so that the final result is not mere pleasure but wisdom; its essential difference from mere verse; its challenge to translators who struggle to re-create in one language what is poetically present in another; its capability of inspiring poets to spring the locks of falsifying or stultifying forms of expression in order to say what they feel and see as they actually felt and saw it."

World, Self, Poem collects the best of the essays submitted by poets and scholars from around the U.S. and Canada, and beyond, for presentation at the "Jubilation of Poets" festival celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Cleveland State University Poetry Center in October 1986. In this collection, eighteen critics consider the works of a number of important postmodern poets and, using various approaches, confront some of the central problems posed by the poetry of the past 25 years. John Ashbery, Wendell Berry, Edward Dorn, Robert Duncan, Geoffrey Hill, Ted Hughes, Lousie Gluck, Adrienna Rich, Denise Levertov, Gary Snyder, Gerald Stern, and William Stafford are among the poets who receive detailed attention in these essays. The questions addressed include political involvement and noninvolvement, the theme of nuclear annihilation, the poet's use and misuse of history, poetry workshops in Central America; the "I" in contemporary poetry; the pastoral vein in contemporary poetry; the nature and implications of concrete and "found" poetry; analogies of poetry and music.
