The guide outlines performance standards for each of three broad goals of English-as-a-Second-Language teaching in elementary and secondary education. The three goals include: use of English to communicate in social settings; use of English to achieve academically in all content areas; and use of English in socially and culturally appropriate ways. Within each of these three goals, three more specific performance standards are enumerated. An introductory section explains the rationale, origins, and use of these standards. Subsequent sections, one for each grade group (pre-K-3, 4-8, 9-12), detail appropriate descriptors and progress indicators for each standard for students at that level. In addition, a brief vignette illustrates their use in the classroom, and some further discussion follows. A glossary is included and supporting documentation is appended. Contains 57 references. The revised PreK-12 English Language Proficiency Standards build on the World-Class Instructional Design and Assessments (WIDA) Consortium's English Language Proficiency Standards for English Language Learners in Kindergarten through Grade 12 (Wisconsin, 2004). The WIDA Consortium is a group of ten states, formed in 2002 with federal monies, that has developed comprehensive English language proficiency standards. This volume also uses grade-level clusters that reflect current educational configurations in the United States. Each of the five language proficiency standards is divided into the four language domains of listening, speaking, reading and writing. The five levels of language proficiency reflect characteristics of language performance at each developmental stage and include: starting (L1), emerging (L2), developing (L3), expanding (L4), and bridging (L5).

How To Align Literacy Instruction Assessment And Standards written by Nancy L. Akhavan and has been published by Heinemann Educational Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Education categories.
In this book, Nancy Akhavan details the stories and strategies that enabled her school to move from "under-performing" status to one in which students achieve and teachers have a whole new understanding of targeted instruction, sensitive assessment, and meaningful curriculum. There is much to appreciate in what she says, from her attention to "thinking small" and understanding the power of the details, her emphasis on planning and goal-setting, to the seriousness with which she takes the standards and incorporates them into the life of the classroom. Drawing on the work of the best in the business, Lucy Calkins, David and Yvonne Freeman, and Tony Alvarado, Akhavan made professional development the heartbeat of her school as she helped her faculty understand that their work begins and ends with continuous assessment of their students. Now she helps readers of her book learn: how child-centered assessment leads to strategic instruction how to best support multilingual learners how to organize for yearlong learning how to think through precise workshop instruction in minilessons how to develop meaningful curriculum around units of study how to create a vibrant school community where standards and accountability stem from regular assessment and examination of instructional practices. Akhavan provides immediately useful information for any elementary teacher, principal, or curriculum developer. Read her book and understand how to use standards as a way to connect meaningful instruction to students, not as a bar that students have to reach or a barrier to real teaching and learning.

The majority teachers of English to speakers of other languages around the world are nonnative speakers of English themselves. Learning and Teaching from Experience presents a wide range of views on NNES (nonnative English speaking) professionals in ESL and EFL settings at various academic levels-including K-12, adult education, community college, and university. This informative volume is divided into the sections focusing on theoretical underpinnings, research, teacher preparation, and classroom application specific to issues facing NNES professionals. Learning and Teaching from Experience is also one of the first volumes to present work by the founding members of the caucus for nonnative English-speakers in the national TESOL professional association, who are rightly considered to be experts in the field. This book will surely interest NNES teachers and researchers, as well as teacher educators and their trainees in the United States and abroad.
