In line with common efforts to measure the state of democracy in countries around the world, this study documents the results of a 'democratic audit' of South Africa. The survey was carried out by the Institute for Democracy in South Africa (IDASA), an independent, non-profit organisation, promoting democracy, governance, sustainability and social justice in South Africa. Some of the indicators used are: participation, elections, accountability, transparency, equality: socio-economic, civil and political rights; and human dignity. The statistical data is interspersed with a series of conceptual essays on democracy in relation to debate, business, capital, media, women, foreign policy, globalisation, accountability and citizenship.

Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Politics - Topic: International relations, grade: 110/110 cum laude, University of Pavia, language: English, abstract: This thesis focuses on the role that external actors play in rebuilding one crucial issue that is at stake in these contexts, which is the legitimacy of post conflict political systems. The analysis will take into account the strategies and programs implemented by external forces specifically by intervening in three key areas: transitional governments, constitution-building processes and elections. The case study analyzed in this thesis is the Afghan one, particularly complex but fundamental to understand the strategies that these actors adopt in such contexts, and the results that can be achieved in countries that recover from conflict. After providing a theoretical framework concerning democratization and its features in war-torn countries, the analysis of the Afghan case will take into account the three areas mentioned above in order to evaluate the impact of external actors in rebuilding legitimacy in the country. Historically, democratization processes have always attracted the attention of scholars and practitioners. However, one case of particular relevance, especially starting from the end of the Cold War, has attracted increasing attention, that is the one of countries that went through violent conflict and start their transition to democracy and peace from a situation of violence and instability. In such scenarios, often external actors, notably the United Nations, intervene with the aim of supporting the transition towards democratic and peaceful assets. However, the outcomes of these interventions are often mixed.

"Are women human? It's not an academic question." In marking the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (December 10, 1948), nine papers--including this provocative title--reflect on the themes of: power and human rights, problems of theory and practice, human rights as social exclusion, and human rights in the post-cold war era. Sharing with the other contributors a less than sanguine view than that taken by mainstream writers on the status of human rights, MIT linguist Noam Chomsky's contribution challenges the US in its policy of relativity. Provides a fresh look at the end of the Cold War and subsequent changes in East-West security relations, asking how policies previously thought to be unrealistic became possible. Combines a post-Wittgensteinian approach to language with insights from Habermas and the Critical Theory of the Frankfurt School to explore the relationship between meaning and changing practice in an analysis of the contradictions of the post-Cold War world. Argues that the end of the Cold War represents a transition from conflict to cooperation in a whole Europe. Distributed by St. Martin's Press. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
