Epigenetic Mechanisms in Development and Disease, the latest volume in the Biochemical Society Symposia series, features ten chapters from the Biochemical Society's Annual Symposium held at the University of Leeds on 11 - 13 December 2012. Epigenetic mechanisms, including the post translational modifications of chromatin (DNA and histones), play pivotal roles in development, cell differentiation and cell identity. Inappropriate regulation of epigenetic mechanisms has been implicated in common human diseases including diabetes, neuropsychiatric disorders and cancers. Environmental influences such as nutrition and stress can lead to epigenetic alterations and contribute to chronic disease biology.

Epigenetics is the study of both heritable and non-heritable changes in the regulation of gene activity and expression that occur without an alteration in the DNA sequence. This dynamic and rapidly developing discipline is making its impact across the biomedical sciences, in particular in toxicology where epigenetic differences can mean that different individuals respond differently to the same drug or chemical. Toxicology and Epigenetics reflects the multidimensional character of this emerging area of toxicology, describing cutting-edge molecular technologies to unravel epigenetic changes, the use of in vivo and in vitro models, as well as the potential use of toxicological epigenetics in regulatory environments. An international team of experts consider the interplay between epigenetics and toxicology in a number of areas, including environmental, nutritional, pharmacological, and computational toxicology, nanomaterials, proteomics and metabolomics, and cancer research. Topics covered include: environment, epigenetics and diseases DNA methylation and toxicogenomics chromatin at the intersection of disease and therapy epigenomic actions of environmental arsenicals environment, epigenetics and cardiovascular health toxicology, epigenetics and autoimmunity ocular epigenomics: potential sites of environmental impact in development and disease nuclear RNA silencing and related phenomena in animals epigenomics – impact for drug safety sciences methods of global epigenomic profiling transcriptomics: applications in epigenetic toxicology Toxicology and Epigenetics is an essential insight into the current trends and future directions of research in this rapidly expanding field for investigators, toxicologists, risk assessors and regulators in academia, industry and government.

Drug Discovery in Cancer Epigenetics is a practical resource for scientists involved in the discovery, testing, and development of epigenetic cancer drugs. Epigenetic modifications can have significant implications for translational science as biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis or therapy prediction. Most importantly, epigenetic modifications are reversible and epigenetic players are found mutated in different cancers; therefore, they provide attractive therapeutic targets. There has been great interest in developing and testing epigenetic drugs, which inhibit DNA methyltransferases, histone modifying enzymes or chromatin reader proteins. The first few drugs are already FDA approved and have made their way into clinical settings. This book provides a comprehensive summary of the epigenetic drugs currently available and aims to increase awareness in this area to foster more rapid translation of epigenetic drugs into the clinic. - Highlights the potential of epigenetic alterations in cancer for drug development - Covers the tools and methods for epigenetic drug discovery, preclinical and clinical testing, and clinical implications of epigenetic therapy - Provides important information regarding putative epigenetic targets, epigenetic technologies, networks and consortia for epigenetic drug discovery and routes for translation

Winner of 2016 BMA Medical Award for Basic and Clinical Sciences The Epigenome and Developmental Origins of Health and Disease synthesizes the existing knowledge on how the in utero environment could be the most important environment in shaping later risk for various diseases or to conversely promote the health of the offspring. The book mines the existing literature from a variety of disciplines from toxicology to nutrition to epigenetics to reveal how contrasting maternal in utero environmental changes might be leading to epigenetic convergence and the resulting deleterious phenotypic and physiological effects in our offspring. It is increasingly becoming apparent that even subtle changes in the mother's diet, stress, and exposure to low concentrations of toxic chemicals at levels deemed safe by the EPA and FDA, such as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDC), can dramatically impact the health of our children, possibly leading to metabolic, cardiovascular, immunological, neurobehavioral disorders, and increased risk for cancer to list but a few examples. - Informs how everyday choices pregnant women make can impact child development - Ties together how in utero environmental changes may be inducing epigenetic changes in the offspring leading to overlapping phenotypes regardless of the initial insult (toxic, nutrition, or stress) - Includes a boxed-in area in each chapter for further references and resources to keep up with the field - Features video interviews with the authors and other key leaders in the field

Your mind and body are inextricably linked. Ignore your inner voice, and your body will pay the price. Ingrid Fredriksson's groundbreaking research on the link between consciousness and epigenetics was met with acclaim at a scientific conference in Tucson. Academics and independent researchers alike agreed: 'This must be shared with the world!' This book is your chance to learn more. Explore the invisible forces that shape our lives, delving into the world of epigenetics and how our genes are activated or silenced by everything from cell type and disease to physiological and psychological stimuli. This book pays special attention to the impact of emotions on health, exploring how trauma, stress, and negativity affect our well-being at the cellular level. Discover how cultivating positivity can lead to a longer, happier life. Fredriksson's groundbreaking study - likely the first of its kind - reveals the practical, everyday implications of epigenetics, demonstrating how our consciousness and emotions influence our health and well-being. This is essential knowledge for everyone, especially healthcare professionals.

Illuminating the processes and patterns that link genotype to phenotype, epigenetics seeks to explain features, characters, and developmental mechanisms that can only be understood in terms of interactions that arise above the level of the gene. With chapters written by leading authorities, this volume offers a broad integrative survey of epigenetics. Approaching this complex subject from a variety of perspectives, it presents a broad, historically grounded view that demonstrates the utility of this approach for understanding complex biological systems in development, disease, and evolution. Chapters cover such topics as morphogenesis and organ formation, conceptual foundations, and cell differentiation, and together demonstrate that the integration of epigenetics into mainstream developmental biology is essential for answering fundamental questions about how phenotypic traits are produced.

Body and soul belong together - a healthy soul in a healthy body. When we do not listen to the soul, body begins to speak.EPIGENETICS is a mechanism for regulating gene activity independent of DNA sequence that determines which genes are turned on or off: in a particular type, in different disease states, in response to physiological or psychological stimulus, how you feel and how you have been treated. The epigenetic factor ends up in the "health endpoints": Cancer, autoimmune diseases, mental disorder and diabetes - Of great importance to public health. But epigenetic patterns are reversible. In recent years scientists have been exploring the effects that stress and emotions have on our cells - in particular, on our chromosomes and mitochondrial DNA. What they have found is that our emotions can shape our physical reality at the molecular level. Depressed and stressed people have a shorter life span. In order to investigate how stress and negative emotions affect health, and to show how consciousness affects epigenetics in the development of disease, questions have been asked and interviews conducted partly with people with the disease meningioma and partly with a healthy control group. The idea of ??this study has been a woman in Sweden, Ingegerd Bergström. She had a brain tumor, meningioma, after 25 years of suffering in a relationship with a psychopath. She underwent surgery and moved away from her husband. After that, she lived healthy and the part of the tumor that could not be removed stopped growing. She has also written a book about her situation and has a group on Facebook, where she has contact with others who have had the same disease. (They are all clear, it is the life situation and how we thought and felt if we become healthy or sick, they say). She herself is convinced that it is the stress that followed through physical and mental abuse that made her ill.
