Environmental finance, particularly energy efficiency and renewable energy (EERE) finance, can and should serve as an interface to other sub-sectors of financial sector promotion such as microfinance, housing finance or agricultural finance. For example, existing clients of financial institutions include small and medium-sized enterprises and households, and these are often suffering from high energy prices or have no access to sustainable energy supply. At the same time, these clients are vulnerable to extreme weather events, and often hit hardest by the impact of climate change. There are many other examples which show that the financial sector has an enormous potential to support “green” investments. In order to tap this potential on a sustainable basis, it is important to have a sound understanding which role financial institutions can and should play. This book provides a blend of well-founded professional and scientific perspectives on the potential of Environmental finance in developing and transition countries.

This textbook provides an introduction to environmental finance and investments. The current situation raises fundamental questions that this book aims to address. Under which conditions could carbon pricing schemes contribute to a significant decrease in emissions? What are the new investment strategies that the Kyoto Protocol and the emerging carbon pricing schemes around the world should promote? In the context of carbon regulation through emission trading schemes, what is the trade-off between production, technological changes, and pollution? What is the nature of the relation between economic growth and the environment? This book intends to provide students and practitioners with the knowledge and the theoretical tools necessary to answer these and other related questions in the context of the so-called environmental finance theory. This is a new research strand that investigates the economic, financial, and managerial impacts of carbon pricing policies.

The finance sector has a crucial role to play in delivering a sustainable future for the planet. To address the Triple Planetary Crisis of climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss, it is vital that the finance sector rapidly accelerates the mobilization of capital to support a successful and just transition to net zero. This requires enhancing both the capabilities of financial institutions and developing the knowledge and skills of finance professionals so that every financial decision takes account of climate change and sustainability. Green and Sustainable Finance is a comprehensive guide to the principles and practice required to manage sustainability risks, engage and support clients, and take advantage of the opportunities presented by the transition of sectors and firms to new, low carbon and nature positive models. This fully updated third edition incorporates a wider perspective with nature-based impacts, risks, dependencies and opportunities considered alongside climate change. It introduces the work of the new International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) along with extensive coverage of wider regulatory and market developments. There is also additional content on adaptation finance, transition finance and transition planning. Endorsed by the Chartered Banker Institute as the core text for the global benchmark Certificate in Green and Sustainable Finance, this book is essential reading for finance professionals, university students and individuals working to embed sustainability in business, finance, policy and regulation.
