As the British empire expanded throughout the world, the English language played an important role in power relations between Britain and its colonies. English was used as a colonizing agent to suppress the indigenous cultures of various peoples and to make them subject to British rule. With the end of World War II, many countries became gradually decolonized, and their indigenous cultures experienced a renaissance. Colonial mores and power systems clashed and combined with indigenous traditions to create postcolonial texts. This volume treats postcoloniality as a process of cultural and linguistic interplay, in which British culture initially suppressed indigenous cultures and later combined with them after the decline of the British empire. The first section of this book provides an introductory overview of English postcoloniality. This section is followed by chapters discussing postcoloniality and literature from an historical perspective in particular countries around the world. The third section gives special attention to the literature and culture of indigenous peoples. A selected bibliography concludes the work.

When Kwame Appiah asked the question whether ?post? in ?postcolonial? was the ?post? in ?postmodern,? he challenged the theoretical tenets of both postmodernism and postcolonial studies and opened up a space for a dialogue, which unfortunately, only a handful of scholars have continued. This volume represents an attempt by Africanist scholars to intervene and change the course of current debates, which are being carried out with little or no thought to their applicability or relevance to African studies. The purpose of this study is not merely to present an ?African? version of postcolonial studies or postmodernism or to ?Africanize? their content and theory. Rather, it aims to re-situate these concepts and debates, which are at risk of being colonized by American and European academic provincialism. This collection considers perspectives from West, South, and East Africa as well as the Caribbean. It approaches current debates from the disciplinary perspectives of anthropology, history, linguistics, literature, philosophy, and sociology while dealing with a diverse range of issues including gender, race, ethnicity, and identity.Contributors to this volume include Grant Farred, Olakunle George, Zine Magubane, Alamin Mazrui, Amina Mire, Adlai Murdoch, Tejumola Olaniyan, Joseph Reilly, and Paul Tiyambe Zeleza.

Postcolonial discourse is fast becoming an area of rich academic debate. At the heart of coloniality and postcoloniality is the contested authority of empire and its impact upon previously colonized peoples and their indigenous cultures. This book examines various theories of colonization and decolonization, and how the ideas of a British empire create networks of discourses in contemporary postcolonial cultures. The various essays in this book address the question of empire by exploring such constructs as nation and modernity, third-world feminisms, identity politics, the status and roles of exiles, exilic subjectivities, border intellectuals, and the presence of a postcolonial body in today's classrooms. Topics discussed include African-American literature, the nature of postcolonial texts in first-world contexts, jazz, films, and TV as examples of postcolonial discourse, and the debates surrounding biculturalism and multiculturalism in New Zealand and Australia.

With the publication of Salman Rushdie's Booker Prize winning novel, ^IMidnight's Children^R in 1981, followed by the unprecedented popularity of his subsequent works, the cinematic adaptation of Michael Ondaatje's ^IThe English Patient,^R many other best-sellers written by South Asian novelists writing in English have gained a tremendous following. This reference is a guide to their lives and writings. The volume focuses on novelists born in South Asia who have written and continue to write about issues concerning that region. Some of the novelists have published widely, while others are only beginning their literary careers. The volume includes alphabetically arranged entries on more than 50 South Asian novelists. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and includes a biography, a discussion of major works and themes, a summary of the novelist's critical reception, and primary and secondary bibliographies.
