Schools that have a high population of low-SES students, including Washington Writers’ Academy continual fall short of state benchmark requirements. Students from low-SES backgrounds tend to have a lack of motivation and disengage from school. Research supports the utilization of ICT’s use can increase engagement and their development of skills and social capita. Additionally, research has proven the importance of building trusting relationships with students from low-SES backgrounds in order to increase engagement. Technology can help embed both content and connectedness for students who need to feel part of a learning community. This project considered literature and research that supports incorporating a learner-centered environment that fosters student engagement. Embedding technology tools within current district curriculum is an approach that can be utilized to create more engagement. This project was created to engage students through the use of Google Classroom as a platform to host PBL approaches and active learning, to increase student engagement and investment in learning.
