Communication, Space, and Design looks at how our worldview shapes our relations to and conceptions of space and place, and how our spaces and designs impact our communication practices. By asserting that our spaces and designs are increasingly promoting various expressions of separation, this book contends that this separation makes us more private. We find this increasing inwardness, for example, in the rise of gated-communities, exclusionary suburbs, and hyper-suburbs. Ultimately, the book asks how our spaces and designs impact our understanding and embodying of democracy, civility, and justice. It also explores how this inward turn limits our sense of obligation to the world and each other by undermining our ability to develop the communicational resiliency and moral sophistication that comes through public interactions.

In the Red Sea Hills of eastern Sudan, where poverty, famines, and conflict loom large, women struggle to gain the status of responsible motherhood through bearing and raising healthy children, especially sons. But biological fate can be capricious in impoverished settings. Amidst struggle for survival and expectations of heroic mothering, women face realities that challenge their ability to fulfill their prescribed roles. Even as the effects of modernity and development, global inequities, and exclusionary government policies challenge traditional ways of life in eastern Sudan and throughout many parts of Africa, reproductive traumas—infertility, miscarriage, children’s illnesses, and mortality—disrupt women’s reproductive health and impede their efforts to achieve the status that comes with fertility and motherhood. In Embodying Honor Amal Hassan Fadlalla finds that the female body is the locus of anxieties about foreign dangers and diseases, threats perceived to be disruptive to morality, feminine identities, and social well-being. As a “northern Sudanese” viewed as an outsider in this region of her native country, Fadlalla presents an intimate portrait and thorough analysis that offers an intriguing commentary on the very notion of what constitutes the “foreign.” Fadlalla shows how Muslim Hadendowa women manage health and reproductive suffering in their quest to become “responsible” mothers and valued members of their communities. Her historically grounded ethnography delves into women’s reproductive histories, personal narratives, and ritual logics to reveal the ways in which women challenge cultural understandings of gender, honor, and reproduction.

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,7, University of Constance, language: English, abstract: This paper will attempt to analyze the concepts of home in Toni Morrison’s novel "Beloved". Sites of home in "Beloved" are seldomly what we expect them to be, because the author wants us to question our understanding of home and the processes that constitute it. So far remarkably few critics focused on home in Morrison’s novel that is based on the historical person Margaret Garner. Among those who did are, most notably, Danielle Russell and Justine Tally. In order to consider this, an examination of the concept of home in Gothic as well as postcolonial literature seems helpful. Note on the restrictions of this essay may seem necessary, as only a short and unfortunately survey of the concepts of home in Gothic and postcolonial fiction can be given. Nonetheless, effort was given to mention the major developments of home and give possible motivations for employing it. The paper will then continue with a closer examination of the sites of home in "Beloved" mentioned before.
