The world is undergoing unprecedented changes in many of the factors that determine its fundamental properties and their in- ence on society. These changes include climate; the chemical c- position of the atmosphere; the demands of a growing human population for food and ?ber; and the mobility of organisms, ind- trial products, cultural perspectives, and information ?ows. The magnitude and widespread nature of these changes pose serious challenges in managing the ecosystem services on which society depends. Moreover, many of these changes are strongly in?uenced by human activities, so future patterns of change will continue to be in?uenced by society’s choices and governance. The purpose of this book is to provide a new framework for n- ural resource management—a framework based on stewardship of ecosystems for human well-being in a world dominated by unc- tainty and change. The goal of ecosystem stewardship is to respond to and shape change in social-ecological systems in order to s-tain the supply and opportunities for use of ecosystem services by society. The book links recent advances in the theory of resilience, sustainability, and vulnerability with practical issues of ecosystem management and governance. The book is aimed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students of natural resource management as well as professional managers, community leaders, and policy makers with backgrounds in a wide array of d- ciplines, including ecology, policy studies, economics, sociology, and anthropology.

Constructing a framework to convey the layered meanings of stewardship will help to focus and guide future research. A cognitive mapping technique was used to elicit responses to the question "What is environmental stewardship?" Semistructured interviews were conducted with representatives of nine Seattle environmental organizations, a group of practitioners who collectively represent over 100 years of experience in the field. Program planners and managers have particularly direct experiences of stewardship. Cognitive mapping enables participants to explore, then display, their particular knowledge and perceptions about an idea or activity. Analysis generated thematic, structural representations of shared concepts. Results show that the practitioners have multilayered perceptions of stewardship, from environmental improvement to community building, and from actions to outcomes.

The Nature Of Environmental Stewardship written by Johnny Wei-Bing Lin and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016 with Philosophy categories.

Environmental issues appear deceptively simple: science tells us what the problems are and how to solve them, and, for Christians, the Bible motivates us to care for creation. And yet, both in society in general as well as in the Christian church in particular, we cannot seem to agree on what to do regarding environmental issues. In this book, climate scientist Johnny Wei-Bing Lin argues that determining the content of environmental stewardship, far from being a straightforward exercise, is a difficult and complex endeavor. He sets forth a general taxonomy, drawing from worldviews, ethical theories, science epistemology, science-policy studies, politics, and economics, that can help us better understand what excellent creation care consists of and how to bridge the differences people have regarding environmental issues. ""Dr. Lin wants peace between folks who are well-intentioned but unable to agree, be they Christians or not! Peace as we wrestle with science and Scripture over our stewardship of God's beloved creation. Lin gives us well-considered ways to sift competing views and supposed facts. . . . This book comes from a master teacher and irenic fellow struggler. A very important synthesis of worldview-driven, informed arguments."" --Terry Morrison, Director Emeritus, Faculty Ministry, InterVarsity Christian Fellowship/USA ""By carefully breaking 'environmental stewardship' down into its component parts, this book offers readers a framework to dialogue--instead of debate--the imperative of creation care. Grappling with the fact that today's ecological and economic challenges cannot be contained by a simple ideology nor a single imagination, Lin guides us toward both a practical synthesis of collective human wisdom and a higher level of conscientiousness in protecting all that God loves."" --Kaleb Nyquist, Steering Committee Member, Young Evangelicals for Climate Action Johnny Wei-Bing Lin (BS and MS, Stanford University; PhD, UCLA) was Professor of Physics at North Park University, where he remains Affiliate Professor of Physics and Engineering. Currently, he is Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Computing Education in the Computing and Software Systems Division at the University of Washington Bothell.

Environmental Stewardship written by Dorothy J. Howell and has been published by Praeger this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-07-23 with Nature categories.

This work addresses the cultural background of stewardship as a progression from individual personal aesthetics to a deeply informed environmental ethic that could become a national environmental policy. Howell begins by assessing our personal cultural background and our philosophical notions of our role in the natural world. She looks at the evolution of Western civilization and changing worldviews in relation to nature, examining especially early conceptions of a more appealing, simpler life closer to nature in contrast to the perceived civilized world that is portrayed as decadent. Howell examines archetypes from literature and the popular arts, finding examples in Jungian psychology and in contemporary film and television that support the Wild Man image and promote the Simple Life yearning. She then looks at the early 20th-century conservation and preservation writers as the most direct ancestors of today's environmental movement and an immediate source of inspiration.
