*L.A. Times Book Prize Finalist* *New York Times Book Review Paperback Row* *New York Times Books to Watch for in July* *Time Best New Books July 2020* Galvanized by her work in our nation's jails, psychiatrist Christine Montross illuminates the human cost of mass incarceration and mental illness Dr. Christine Montross has spent her career treating the most severely ill psychiatric patients. Several years ago, she set out to investigate why so many of her patients got caught up in the legal system when discharged from her care--and what happened to them therein. Waiting for an Echo is a riveting, rarely seen glimpse into American incarceration. It is also a damning account of policies that have criminalized mental illness, shifting large numbers of people who belong in therapeutic settings into punitive ones. The stark world of American prisons is shocking for all who enter it. But Dr. Montross's expertise--the mind in crisis--allowed her to reckon with the human stories behind the bars. A father attempting to weigh the impossible calculus of a plea bargain. A bright young woman whose life is derailed by addiction. Boys in a juvenile detention facility who, desperate for human connection, invent a way to communicate with one another from cell to cell. Overextended doctors and correctional officers who strive to provide care and security in environments riddled with danger. In these encounters, Montross finds that while our system of correction routinely makes people with mental illness worse, just as routinely it renders mentally stable people psychiatrically unwell. The system is quite literally maddening. Our methods of incarceration take away not only freedom but also selfhood and soundness of mind. In a nation where 95 percent of all inmates are released from prison and return to our communities, this is a practice that punishes us all.

This is a story of dysfunctional families and the effects encountered by one young woman who has been in a state of denial for decades. When the winds of change slowly blow in her direction-- this woman is reminded and convinced that her life has been a difficult one at best. She is forced to search her scattered and fragmented memories in an attempt to survive the unrelenting devastating blows of a difficult reality. The reality of her past begins to reveal it's haunting qualities early one morning after a disturbing dream and continues to grow while she survives one devastating blow after another. And through a persistant state of depression with a mutilated spirit and her amputated muse she begins therapy with a compassionate miracle worker. Her journey is a long one--as her therapist guides her though a maze of suppressed and repressed memories into recognition. And with recognition is a set of new eyes viewing and evaluating all of her choices while living in a life of denial that she created for existance. Survivng as a damaged person can dictate how a soul will evolve. An important component is the disposition of the person. A person's character dictates how the damaged person lives/survives and they usually know how to survive; it can be a negative or a positive life of survival. Survival depends strongly upon the individual, the boundaries and environment that they create to support his or her life. With the support of her family and friends she finds acceptance of her reality and purges her soul of a mistaken life style of fantasies.

Excerpt from Echoes From Years Gone James Hoggarth, the eldest of seven children, all boys, was born July 13, 1834, in a small cottage, at Ambleside, Westmorland. His father, Thomas Hoggarth, was born in the valley of Longsleddale, Westmorland, January 5, 1805, and was the youngest and only son of three children of Thomas Hoggarth, a small farmer, who was born in the vale of Troutbeck, Westmorland, and related to the Woodburne and Birkett families, of Troutbeck. James, soon after he was born, to all appearance, was unlikely to live long. His father, anxious to have him baptized, walked, by way of Kirkstone Pass, to Troutbeck, to the house of his old friend, the Rev. William Sewell, the Vicar; and, reaching the house about midnight, knocked loudly at the door, which aroused the rev. gentleman, who, thinking that there was something very important requiring his attention, hurriedly jumped out of bed, and, throwing the window wide open, popped out his head, and shouted at the top of his voice, "Whaa's theear at this time o' neet?" "It's me," came the answer. "And whaa's me, I pray tha," said the parson. "I am Thomas Hoggarth, of Ambleside," was the reply. "I have come to ask you if you will oblige me by coming to-night to my house, to baptize a child which seems not likely to live very long. A Silicon Valley scandal sets the world on a dystopian downward spiral in this tech thriller of virtual reality and corporate conspiracy. Mike is a Silicon Valley wunderkind who stood idly by while his company launched an addicting social media platform with disastrous consequences for the world. Then he watched as an outrageous tech scandal pushed a polarized country to the brink of collapse. But now, after getting trapped in a loop of his own memories, Mike is doomed to watch society fall apart over and over. Only by crossing paths with Charlotte Boone—once Hollywood’s up-and-coming royalty—does a kink appear in the pattern. By pulling off a daring heist in both the virtual and real worlds, Charlotte may hold the key to burning it all to the ground: the company, the lying pundits, and the echo chamber itself.
