Earth System Science Bridging The Gaps Between Disciplines written by Gerrit Lohmann and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-11-06 with Science categories.
Earth system science is traditionally split into various disciplines (Geology, Physics, Meteorology, Oceanography, Biology etc.) and several sub-disciplines. Overall, the diversity of expertise provides a solid base for interdisciplinary research. However, gaining holistic insights into the Earth system requires the integration of observations, paleoclimate data, analysis tools and modeling. These different approaches of Earth system science are rooted in various disciplines that cut across a broad range of timescales. It is, therefore, necessary to link these disciplines at a relatively early stage in PhD programs. The linking of ‘data and modeling’, as it is the special emphasis in our graduate school, enables graduate students from a variety of disciplines to cooperate and exchange views on the common theme of Earth system science, which leads to a better understanding of processes within a global context.

Over the last decade, the study of cycles as a model for the earth's changing climate has become a new science. Earth Systems Science is the basis for understanding all aspects of anthropogenic global change, such as chemically forced global climate change. The work is aimed at those students interested in the emerging scientific discipline.Earth Systems Science is an integrated discipline that has been rapidly developing over the last two decades. New information is included in this updated edition so that the text remains relevant. This volume contains five new chapters, but of special importance is the inclusion of an expanded set of student exercises. The two senior authors are leading scientists in their fields and have been awarded numerous prizes for their research efforts.* First edition was widely adopted* Authors are highly respected in their field* Global climate change, integral to the book, is now one of the most important issues in atmospheric sciences and oceanography

Today's society is concerned with a multitude of events affecting the Earth system, ranging from natural processes such as ocean circulation, weather systems, and geophysics to concerns like acid rain, ecotoxicology, and the greenhouse effect. To understand the impact of these events on the Earth system and to resolve environmental problems, knowledge of all the earth sciences and how they interact is essential.**The Encyclopedia of Earth System Science is the first encyclopedia to comprehensively cover, in one place, all the earth sciences--including atmospheric science, biogeochemistry, climatology, ecology, geology, geophysics, glaciology, hydrology, meteorology, mineralogy, oceanography, petrology, and numerous other fields. It treats the Earth as a system of interactive processes and describes how these processes affect and are affected by each other.**Complete in four volumes, the Encyclopedia provides a broad base of knowledge. An international group of experts, all distinguished in their fields, have written in-depth articles with extensive cross-referencing to stress the interconnection between all earth processes. The glossaries, concise subject definitions, brief outlines, and recent bibliographies found in each article also provide the reader with quick access to each topic. Key Features * Four volumes, with articles arranged alphabetically for direct access * 15,000-entry subject index included in Volume 4 * More than 250 articles * 2,629 pages * 1,300 illustrations * 250 tables * 1,300 glossary entries * 1,600 bibliographic entries * Extensive cross-referencing * Full-color plates * Large 8-1/2" x 11", double-column format * Printed on acid free paper, Smyth sewn, and casebound * Internationally renowned Advisory Board with members from the United States, Japan, the Soviet Union, France, and China

This volume includes revised versions of most of the presentations made at the International Conference «Understanding the Earth Sys tem: Compartments, Processes and Interactions" held on November 24-26, 1999 in Bonn. The Conference was organized by the German National Committee on Global Change Research as part of the Bonn Science Festival 1999-2000. The Bonn Science Festival (Wissen schaftsfestival Region Bonn) was organized and funded by sfg Strukturforderungsgesellschaft Bonn/Rhein-Siegl Ahrweiler mbH. The generous support for organizing the conference and printing this volume by sfg is gratefully acknowledged. Additional financial and organizational support for separate workshop sessions and publica tions have also been provided by the German Federal Ministry for Science and Research, BMBF and Germany's major research funding agency, Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The editors wish to gratefully acknowledge the help, advice and especially patience of many individuals who have contributed to this volume. The contributions are intended to document the debate on crucial issues of the emerging concept of earth system science and to stimulate the necessary scientific discussion. While every effort has been made on the part of the editors to ensure consistency in termi nology, style and methods of quotation, the variety of contributors has inevitably resulted in certain discrepancies.
