The purpose of this action research project is to use and evaluate how drama-based instruction can help students be actively engaged in a classroom by creating an environment of collaboration, and trust, while incorporating a deeper level of thinking through dialogical-meaning making as well as using problem posing learning instruction. The data was composed by using journal entries and video recordings to analyze and find emergent themes that would support the effectiveness of using drama-based instruction within a classroom. Following the analysis, the data showed that high engagement ensued when drama-based instruction had opportunities for students to use physical movement as a way to show meaning for expressing an idea for a concept or problem that was being taught. Students were also engaged when they were faced with a problem that was relatable to them with opportunities to use Vygotsky's social learning philosophy to understand different perspectives, strategies and ideas to solve their own struggles while building and reflecting on important pro-social skills within a classroom

Required teacher training for graduate student instructors (GSIs) teaching in foreign language (FL) departments is often limited to a front-loaded, one-semester methods course that largely overlooks the needs of more experienced GSIs. The current discourse on FL GSI development has sought to alleviate this problem by giving recommendations of theoretical frameworks and pedagogical practices GSIs can learn to improve the undergraduate curriculum and their own teaching abilities, such as a multiliteracies framework and high leverage teaching practices. However, there are few empirical studies that document how graduate students engage with and take up recommended teaching practices through professional development in their departments. Furthermore, no evidence-based process model of such uptake exists as of yet. This dissertation involved a study of nine GSIs’ uptake of drama-based pedagogy and the factors that helped or hindered their engagement with relevant concepts and techniques. A formative experiment study design, ethnographic data collection, and a grounded theory approach to data analysis yielded a process model of how experienced GSIs engaged with an innovative pedagogy. This model presents a central phenomenon, engagement, that is grounded in extensive qualitative data, with engagement operationalized to mean that GSIs thought about, allocated resources to, and strove toward implementing the drama-based pedagogy at the core of the semester-long professional development. Engagement as a process was embedded in individual and programmatic contexts and specific conditions, such as helpful and hindering factors. Both desirable and less desirable outcomes resulted from engagement with the innovation of drama-based pedagogy. Thus, this theoretical model has implications for how educational developers implement their GSI teaching development. By identifying factors that trigger and help engagement, such as efficacy, value, and support, educational developers can account for and influence these factors in their orientations, workshops, meetings, graduate courses, and other offerings that promote innovative pedagogy. Conversely, educational developers can mitigate hindering factors, such as time and risk, to strive towards more desirable outcomes of GSI engagement as well as more frequent engagement.

A growing body of evidence suggests that some Science teachers use drama-based strategies in order to promote understanding of abstract scientific concepts. These strategies employ action and imagination to simulate systems and processes that are too fast, too slow, too big, too small, too expensive or too dangerous to observe in the classroom. A small group of quantitative and qualitative studies over the past thirty years has suggested that these physical simulations enable learning in secondary students, by promoting discourse and by conveying concept features through a range of sensations. The field is as yet under-theorised, consisting of single case designs and unreplicated methodologies. This multiple case study focused upon an intervention design based on a pedagogical model developed in my Masters research. This study aimed to explore the characteristics of students' interaction and the nature of their resultant conceptions over four months. Each case focussed upon one of eight Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 classes across a variety of UK schools. In each, a curriculum-based particle theory topic was taught in a double-period lesson. Data included video, participant observations, and interviews with three students from each class collected at pre, post and delayed intervals. Findings suggested that the pedagogy engendered engagement and self-regulation in group model-making tasks, and supported thought experiment-type visualisations of dynamic processes. Conceptual development was found to continue up to four months after the lessons. A model of learning was developed in which social interaction and multimodal discourse promoted the association of conceptual features with affective, visual and embodied images, which supported recall, discussion and further conceptual development in the longer term.
