Doing Psychotherapy With Men is an ideal primer in how to work respectfully and appropriately with men and boys. Written by bestselling author, Dr John Ashfield, this is a book of vital importance to practitioners in the fields of psychology, psychotherapy, psychiatry, primary care, and counselling - as well as anybody concerned with health and mental health promotion. The greatest strength of the book is that it breaks free from glib ideological notions about gender and males, and draws on evidence from a broad range of academic disciplines in presenting an eminently useful male psychology. The final chapter of the book has been written by well known author and academic psychologist from the U.S.A. - Dr Scott, D. Miller (known internationally for his research and work in the field of FIT - feedback informed treatment), and a colleague, Danish psychologist, Susanne Bargmann. This is currently the only book of its kind and scope on the market, and will contribute much to improving the effectiveness of all psychosocial practitioners in engaging and working with men and boys.

This Handbook represents the first concerted effort to understand male mental health in a way that facilitates a positive step forward in both theory and treatment. An alarming number of men experience serious mental health issues, as demonstrated by high rates of suicide and violent offending. Despite these problems, the study of male psychology has either been overlooked, or viewed as a problem of defective masculinity. This handbook brings together experts from across the world to discuss men’s mental health, from prenatal development, through childhood, adolescence, and fatherhood. Men and masculinity are explored from multiple perspectives including evolutionary, cross-cultural, cognitive, biological, developmental, and existential viewpoints, with a focus on practical suggestions and demonstrations of successful clinical work with men. Throughout, chapters question existing models of understanding and treating men’s mental health and explore new approaches, theories and interventions. This definitive handbook encapsulates a new wave of positive theory and practice in the field of male psychology and will be of great value to professionals, academics, and those working with males through the lifespan in any sector related to male mental health and wellbeing.

In The Room With Men written by Matt Englar-Carlson and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Health & Fitness categories.

In the Room With Men explores theories of masculinities, current research on the psychology of men, and how these ideas are applied in clinical practice. Men enter therapy less frequently than women, and when they do, therapy can be quite different than it is with women clients. To work with men successfully, therapists must be aware of these differences and often must adjust their approach. Although a growing amount of research addresses the mental health issues that men face, it is hard to find anything in the literature documenting the experiences of therapists working with men or ways to tailor therapy to their unique needs. The contributing authors of this volume remedy this situation by bringing readers into the counseling room with their male clients and describing their personal views about and their particular approach to working with men. At the heart of each chapter is a case narrative, giving readers a hands-on feel for how therapy works with male clients and insight into how and why therapists make certain clinical decisions. backgrounds, and in so doing highlight how notions of masculinity intersect with other aspects of culture. Over the course of the volume, these case examples and discussions paint a clear picture of the clinical realities of working with men. Featuring empirical discussions throughout the volume as well as a comprehensive theory and literature survey, In the Room With Men effectively combines research, theory, and actual practice, making this a must-have resource for all mental health practitioners.

Donald R. McCreary and Joan C. Chrisler The Development of Gender Studies in Psychology Studies of sex differences are as old as the ?eld of psychology, and they have been conducted in every sub?eld of the discipline. There are probably many reasons for the popularity of these studies, but three reasons seem to be most prominent. First, social psychological studies of person perception show that sex is especially salient in social groups. It is the ?rst thing people notice about others, and it is one of the things we remember best (Fiske, Haslam, & Fiske, 1991; Stangor, Lynch, Duan, & Glass, 1992). For example, people may not remember who uttered a witty remark, but they are likely to remember whether the quip came from a woman or a man. Second, many people hold ?rm beliefs that aspects of physiology suit men and women for particular social roles. Men’s greater upper body strength makes them better candidates for manual labor, and their greater height gives the impression that they would make good leaders (i. e. , people we look up to). Women’s reproductive capacity and the caretaking tasks (e. g. , breastfeeding, baby minding) that accompany it make them seem suitable for other roles that require gentleness and nurturance. Third, the logic that underlies hypothesis testing in the sciences is focused on difference. Researchers design their studies with the hope that they can reject the null hypothesis that experimental groups do not differ.

Treatment Of Eating Disorders written by Margo Maine and has been published by Academic Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-09-08 with Psychology categories.

Eating disorders (EDs) affect at least 11 million people in the United States each year and spread across age, race, ethnicity and socio-economic class. While professional literature on the subject has grown a great deal in the past 30 years, it tends to be exclusively research-based and lacking expert clinical commentary on treatment. This volume focuses on just such commentary, with chapters authored by both expert clinicians and researchers. Core issues such as assessment and diagnosis, the correlation between EDs and weight and nutrition, and medical/psychiatric management are discussed, as are the underrepresented issues of treatment differences based on gender and culture, the applications of neuroscience, EDNOS, comorbid psychiatric disorders and the impact of psychiatric medications. This volume uniquely bridges the gap between theoretical findings and actual practice, borrowing a bench-to-bedside approach from medical research. - Includes real-world clinical findings that will improve the level of care readers can provide, consolidated in one place - Underrepresented issues such as gender, culture, EDNOS and comorbidity are covered in full - Represents outstanding scholarship, with each chapter written by an expert in the topic area
