Diffuse Pollution of surface, coastal and ground waters is a major environmental and economic problem in the world today. Unlike point source pollution, which has to some extent been controlled by developments in technology and regulation, diffuse pollution is difficult to control, requiring the application of technological and socio-economical approaches and of education. The 46 papers in these proceedings have been selected from those presented at the 3rd International Conference on Diffuse Pollution, which addressed urban and rural diffuse pollution problems and solutions as experienced in several countries. Recent advances in wastewater treatment research and practice are leading towards sound technical approaches for producing high quality effluent from wastewater; this offers a reliable new water source for various beneficial uses, from relatively simple agricultural irrigation, to the recycling of industrial process water, to complex potable water reuse schemes. Wastewater reclamation, recycling and reuse is thus closely linked to advanced wastewater treatment. Selected Proceedings of the 1st International Specialised Conference on Water Quality and its Management, held in New Dehli, India, 2-6 March 1998. Water resources development should not only ensure water supply in the right quantity at the right time but also ensure that the water is of the right quality. While drinking water must meet stringent quality standards, water quality is also important for agricultural, industrial and other uses. Increasing pollution, urbanisation and industrialisation has lead to a growing threat to water quality in rivers and lakes. Groundwater quality can also be affected as a result of the use of agrochemicals, wastewater irrigation, and salinity and landfill leachate intrusion. Such problems are often most acute in developing countries where water is short to begin with. This was the subject matter of Water Quality and its Management. From over 200 original submissions, 67 were orally presented, many of direct and practical regional relevance.
