Gender And Genocide In Cambodia written by Azra Rashid and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-10-31 with History categories.

This book explores the multiplicity of women’s experiences in the Cambodian genocide during the four-year rule of the Khmer Rouge. The dominant discourses of genocide often speak from a patriarchal and national perspective, rendering women speechless, and yet in this volume, the female survivors of the Cambodian genocide testify not only to the specific atrocities committed during the war but also to the pre-war conditions that laid the groundwork for a gender-specific victimization of women and its continuation post-war. With the help of testimonies from Khmer women who joined the Khmer Rouge, women who experienced sexual violence during the Khmer Rouge era, women who fled the country, and the Cham women who faced expulsion from home, this book explores the diversity of women’s experiences under the Khmer Rouge. Survivors’ accounts show that a Khmer woman’s experience with the Khmer Rouge was considerably different from the experience of not only a Khmer man but also a woman from a religious or ethnic minority group or a woman who chose to join the Khmer Rouge. These differences are conveniently ignored in nationalist discourses in Cambodia and by western scholars of history and gender-based violence, and they are given even less consideration in discourses about women survivors in diaspora. Instead of forcing generalization and universalization of gendered crimes of war, Gender and Genocide in Cambodia employs feminist curiosity and closely examines women’s experiences under the Khmer Rouge from multiple vantage points. This volume is essential reading for students and scholars interested in gender and cultural studies, political history, and modern history.

The Routledge Handbook of Heritage and Gender offers an exceptional range of international contributions that interrogate and analyse the interactions within - and between - heritage and gender. Taking an intersectional and global approach, the Handbook opens up space for a more critical and situated consideration of how gender comes into contact with heritage as a concept and practice. The volume considers heritage in the broadest sense: as a concept, performance, and materialisation. The contributions also consider how heritage impacts identity, power, people, values, politics, and ethics as well as processes and sites across material culture, nature, and intangible practices. The volume and its contributions are inclusive of cisgender, trans, non-binary, agender, and intersex identities. Reflecting the multidisciplinary and transnational voices of its authors, the collection challenges readers to consider what a focused analysis of heritage and gender can offer heritage studies as an evolving discipline and field of study. The Routledge Handbook of Heritage and Gender will be of interest to academics and students working in Heritage Studies, Museum Studies, Art History, History, Anthropology, Gender and Women’s Studies, and International Development.

This book examines the role of Armenian community centres, in relation to the local dwelling place of Montréal, the distant homeland, and the rest of the Armenian diaspora. Due to the staggering increase in migration and to the proliferation of transnational flows, our conception of home has substantially changed. Thus, what motivates immigrants to build centres representative of their ethnicity in their new dwelling places? Based on research at two Armenian community centres in Montréal, this book provides insight into how these mediated social spaces embody elements that represent the distant home, the diaspora, and the local dwelling place. Through methods of participant observation and interviews, this analysis demonstrates how diasporan Armenians living in Montréal, negotiate multiple cultural identities through their involvement with Armenian community centres and also how ethnic community centres articulate a collective memory in the present. This book therefore sheds light on the challenges and the complexities diasporic communities face and can be useful to scholars interested in diaspora studies, migration studies, collective memory, social work, and in urban studies.

Experiences of migration and dwelling-in-displacement impinge upon the lives of an ever increasing number of people worldwide, with business class comfort but more often with unrelenting violence. Since the early 1990s, the political and cultural realities of global migration have led to a growing interest in the different forms of “diasporic” existence and identities. The articles in this book do not focus on the external boundaries of diaspora – what is diasporic and what is not? – but on one of its most important internal boundaries, which is indicated by the second term in the title of this book: memory. It is not by chance that the right to remember, the responsibility to recall, are central issues of the debates in diasporic communities and their relation to their cultural and political surroundings. The relation of diaspora and memory contains important critical and maybe even subversive potentials. Memory can transcend the territorial logic of dispersal and return, and emerge as a competing source of diasporic identity. The articles in this volume explore how, shaped by the responsibilities of testimony as well as by the normalizing forces of amnesia and forgetting and political interests, memory is a performative, figurative process rather than a secure space of identity.
