Diasporas large-scale ethnic migrations have been a source of growing concern as we try to understand the nature of community, identity and nationalism. Traditionally, diaspora communities have been understood to be pariah communities, and most work on diasporas has focused on specific groups such as the Jewish or African Diaspora. This book is unique in arguing against traditional interpretations and in taking a comparative look at a range of diasporas, including the Jewish, Arab, Chinese, Japanese, Indian, Maltese, Greek and Armenian diasporas.Taking the past four centuries into consideration, the authors examine diaspora trading networks across the globe on both a regional and international level. They investigate the common patterns and practices in the enterprises of diaspora peoples and entrepreneurs. The regions covered include Western Europe, the Mediterranean, South West Asia and the Indian Ocean, and South East Asia. Global networks of diaspora trading groups were crucial to international trade well before the twentieth century, yet because they were not part of established institutions they have remained elusive to economists, sociologists and historians.Through an understanding of diaspora trading networks, we learn not only about diaspora communities but also about the roots of the modern global economy.

Network Dynamics Of Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurship written by Aki Harima and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015 with categories.
Entrepreneurial activities of the Diaspora attracted increased research attention in the recent years, as the phenomenon of migration is rapidly growing. The Diaspora refers to the migrants and their descendants who maintain a strong relationship with their country of origin (Safran, 1991). The previous research has, however, predominantly focused on diaspora entrepreneurs from developing or emerging economies and those who originate from developed countries are almost invisible, even though they are empirically observable (cf. Elo, 2013; Horiuchi, 2010). In fact, their entrepreneurial activities have mostly been neglected by previous research in diaspora as well as international entrepreneurship. This study coins a new concept 'Descending diaspora entrepreneurs' for the entrepreneurs from developed countries who migrate to less developed ones and explores their entrepreneurial activities through the network perspective. The literature review on entrepreneurial networks as well as diaspora networks identifies three potentially significant benefits of networks on entrepreneurial activities: (i) opportunity recognition, (ii) access to resources and (iii) motivation sustainment. Explorative multiple case studies with Japanese diaspora entrepreneurs in emerging economies (Philippine, Guatemala and Argentina) was conducted and the empirical findings were descriptively analyzed in line with the identified network benefits. Finally, the model of network dynamics for Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs is developed based on the findings.

This contributed volume focuses on diasporans, their characteristics, networks, resources and activities in relation to international business and entrepreneurship. It presents an overview of diaspora concepts from an economic perspective, and analyzes the global-economic and societal effects and mechanisms, revealing both positive and negative aspects of diaspora activities. Providing insights into the socio-cultural influences, it discusses diaspora entrepreneurship and international business, the respective organisational models, investments and business types. Lastly it offers an assessment of managing diaspora resources and policymaking. This book was created by an interdisciplinary team of editors, co-authors and reviewers including historians, sociologists, psychologists, linguists and ethnologists, as well as experts in public policy, international business, marketing and entrepreneurship. This unique team (many of the authors are themselves diasporans with an extensive understanding of their topic) provides the first global academic platform on the subject, combining the latest empirical evidence from developing, emerging, transitional and developed countries with various combinations of diaspora flows that to date have received little attention.

Globalization effects nearly everyone and everything; and so, it does for networks and its different dimensions. Anna-Lena Bunse explores the network structure of migrant entrepreneurs in Bremen-Gröpelingen, and asks how informal networks for migrant entrepreneurs are structured and how migrant entrepreneurs can benefit from informal networks. It is shown how diaspora entrepreneurs in Gröpelingen communicate with each other and how this effects their businesses. The results highlight, that there are benefits for all diaspora entrepreneurs and their network partners, yet it also shows that they could use their networks in a more efficient way to optimize their businesses.

Diaspora Networks In International Business And Transnational Entrepreneurship A Literature Review written by Maria Elo and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014 with categories.
Many underlying developments of globalization should be investigated. Diaspora networks represent an invisible actor in international business (IB), and embody a channel and arena for transnational entrepreneurship (TE). Thus, understanding the development of contemporary diaspora networks and exploring their business potential is important. These networks impact multiple aspects of economic activity, such as investment, entrepreneurship, innovation, expansion, internationalization and creation of international businesses. Despite the multifaceted influence of diaspora networks, little empirical research on their effects has been conducted. This gap may originate in the lack of theoretical and conceptual rigor. In short, the term “diaspora network” remains to be fully discovered in international business. This paper contributes to the literature by increasing the understanding of diaspora networks by reviewing the current literature. The purpose is to enrich the conceptual and theoretical development of IB and TE by connecting them to the emerging field of diaspora entrepreneurship. The paper discusses diaspora networks, illustrates extant theories and research findings, and suggests issues for further research.

Networks of Power in Modern Greeceprovides exciting new perspectives on Greek history and society. The collection presents pioneering work on the Greek merchant marine and the role of women in the Greek War of Independence. Local perspectives transform common assumptions regarding the function of miracle-working shrines and the place of religion in the early nineteenth century. Essays show how clientilistic networks linked the nationalist heroes of the Macedonian Struggle to the anticommunism of the Civil War, analyze the populist radicalism of Andreas Papandreou, a figure who dominated Greek politics in the final decades of the Cold War, and emphasize the ambiguities of a "modern Greece." Additional chapters by leading anthropologists, such as Ren e Hirschon, Roger Just, and Juliet Du Boulay, apply an ethnographic approach toward the understanding of social institutions and practices, from divorce to sacred foodstuffs. Written in honor of the classical historian John Campbell, the multidisciplinary essays challenge conventional ideas of Greek nationalism and social development and touch upon broader issues, including the emergence of nation-states, the relationship between familial and ideological conflict, and the continued relevance of religion in modern life.

Promoting entrepreneurship abroad by engaging, designing, and implementing a comprehensive Diaspora strategy network constitutes an immense source of 'soft power.' Diaspora network is the new impetus to drive entrepreneurship and has the capacity to convert the brain drain into brain gain and brain circulation. Diasporas, through their confluence of education, network, and access to capital in home countries, are particularly advantageous for global entrepreneurs due to their international presence and the wide range of resources they can potentially make available to entrepreneurs. To effectively use Diaspora as a tool, policymakers need to create a favorable business climate through trade liberalization reforms, encourage flows of FDIs, ensure good governance through transparent financial and legal frameworks, and engage the network through an ecosystem that promotes entrepreneurship.
