Leadership education has become an essential outcome of higher education in the past decade and yet leadership development efforts vary greatly on campuses. In response, the International Leadership Association (ILA) published “Guiding Questions: Guidelines for Leadership Education Programs.” The Guiding Questions document is a result of a five-year, collaborative process to create guidelines for leadership education programs. ILA’s format of open-ended guiding questions is applicable to any student affairs practitioner developing a leadership learning program. This sourcebook was developed specifically to assist higher education professionals in their understanding, conceptualization, and implementation of the five standards outlined in the ILA Guiding Questions: Context, Conceptual Framework, Content, Teaching and Learning, and Assessment of Leadership Education. It explores leadership education for undergraduate students and provides a foundation for readers to develop students’ leadership capacity. Using the ILA’s Guiding Questions as a framework, this sourcebook will enable you to develop a leadership education program on your campus. This is the 140th volume of this Jossey-Bass higher education quarterly series. An indispensable resource for vice presidents of student affairs, deans of students, student counselors, and other student services professionals, New Directions for Student Services offers guidelines and programs for aiding students in their total development: emotional, social, physical, and intellectual.

College Student Leadership Development introduces the idea that we all play a part in producing leadership and that learning how to participate in the process of leadership is something that all college students need to learn as part of their college academic experience. Rather than approaching leadership from the traditional model emphasizing specific skill sets, this book acquaints students with how to learn leadership using the ReAChS model of leadership development (Reflection, Assessment, Challenge, Support). It then encourages students to directly engage their own experiences to hone their leader identity and understanding of leadership as well as improve their leadership knowledge and skills. Step-by-step exercises lead students in reflecting on their experiences, assessing themselves, choosing challenges, creating support networks, and finally capturing and communicating to others what they have learned. Throughout, examples of student leaders’ experiences provide readers with powerful examples of others’ successes and struggles in leadership alongside the latest psychological research on learning and development.

High school students have a wealth of opportunities to practice leadership skills. Focusing on the importance of leadership training to help teens develop and strengthen their ability to influence, in this project I evaluate the current research about best practices in adolescent leadership training. Although best practices suggest that students grow as leaders with intentional training and guidance from mentors and coaches, few students who hold leadership positions in school or community organizations receive any training at all. This paper describes the necessity for, and creation of a program designed to inspire, motivate and strengthen leadership skills in high school students.

American institutions of higher education are working to develop relevant and meaningful learning experiences that prepare young people for leadership in a knowledge-dense, adaptive, and multicultural society. Existing theories of student leadership are lacking, however, in that they either focus primarily on one college context or lack specifics about the importance of reflection for young, developing leaders. This qualitative research study explores the learning outcomes and leadership narratives of undergraduate student leaders at a large public university. It is informed by the fields of identity development and leadership studies in an effort to understand how college aged students learn the skills of leadership, develop over their college career, and come to identify as leaders. Through narrative and artifact-driven interviews, the student participants reflected deeply on their learning and development in college. These young leaders engage in meaningful, team-based learning opportunities across multiple curricular, co-curricular, extracurricular, and community-based contexts. They demonstrate that college students lead across multiple aspects of their identities and mapped these connections through leadership lifeline documents. Fostering these reflective conversations is just one of the recommendations for college development professionals to best support undergraduate student leaders. More recommendations for theoretical advances in the field of undergraduate student leader development are explored in the study. In short, this study's focus on learning leadership is unique in the literature. It explores three new areas in which young adults develop leadership: identifying and committing to a core personal mission, developing emotional intelligence, and experimenting with peer teaching of leadership.

The literature explored the impact that leadership-based programs at universities can have on a student's leadership development. Topics such as leadership skills, leadership identity, mentorship, and building student success were addressed. Leadership-based programs can help students develop and grow in higher education. The opportunities they provide can help students become better prepared once they graduate by helping students gain valuable knowledge and skills that can later be used in their careers. This research sought to investigate how leadership-based programs at universities impact student leadership development. In addition, this research explored how mentorship can help students develop their leadership capacity and leadership skills. The researcher conducted the study at Orchid University and used a mixed-methods approach using both quantitative and qualitative methods to survey a population of undergraduate students involved in a leadership-based program called the Learning by Leading Program. The survey asked the students questions about their experience in a leadership-based program and several questions regarding the leadership skills they have learned while participating in the program, how they view their leadership identity, and their staff mentors. For the qualitative portion of the study, the researcher holistically read all of the participants' open-ended responses and categorized them into meaningful groupings. Once the groups were established, the researcher then coded the data and interpreted the common themes revolving around each of the topics discussed. The study confirms that participants are gaining important leadership skills, as well as developing their own leadership identity through the opportunities provided in the Learning by Leading Program. Overall, participants in the Learning by Leading Program are being guided by their mentors to develop their leadership identity as well as development as a leader. The results from this research provide a framework for leadership development and educators in higher education. By understanding that every student is unique, educators can engage with students in their leadership development process.

This edited volume reveals how the journey of transformation at the University of the Free State (UFS) became interwoven with student leadership development and global learning. The UFS initiated two intersecting co-curricular programmes, namely, the First-Year Leadership for Change (F1L4C) programme in 2010; and the triennial Global Leadership Summit (GLS) in 2012. Although these programmes changed over time, their core focus remained to be the development of transformational student leaders through the creation of global learning spaces. From its inception in 2010 to the last GLS in 2018, the UFS global learning project involved 780 students and 259 staff members from 109 institutions, across four continents. The goal of this edited volume is to create a deeper understanding of how the UFS F1L4C and GLS programmes enhanced student leadership development through global learning, especially in the context of higher education transformation.
