Research has revealed phenomenon of the shifting center of English language use to non-native English speakers and the challenges this imposes on monolingual English speakers in global, multicultural environments where English is spoke as a Lingua Franca. This project explores the recent history of English as a Lingua Franca as well as contemporary thought regarding how to develop intercultural and language awareness in adult learners. An Effective workshop must acknowledge the differing views of participants and through guided reflective thinking, question and deconstruct deeply-rooted beliefs about the English Language in order to produce sustainable and effective practices for English speakers in diverse linguistic settings. The language awareness workshop for university students and instructors aims at providing participants with tools to discover how to adjust their language and communication style when in an English as a Lingua franca environment. This is accomplished by reflecting on experiences and long held beliefs about English language use. Additionally, it combines summative elements of evaluation that will assist facilitators in designing future intercultural trainings, with formative elements of evaluation that will serve to support and encourage the personal and professional growth of participants.
