Boyd R. Compton lahir di Los Angeles pada 1925. Setelah lulus dari Princeton College dalam Ilmu Hubungan Intemasional pada 1943, ia memperoleh MA dari University of Washington, Seattle, dengan spesialisasi sejarah kebudayaan Cina. Studinya tentang Cina telah menghasiikan buku berjudul Mao's China: Party Reform Documents, 1942-1944 (1951). la mengalihkan perhatian ke Indonesia karena gagal memasuki Cina akibat Revolusi Kebudayaan. Tinggal di Indonesia selama lima tahun sejak 1952-1956, semula ia mempersiapkan disertasi ten. tang sejarah kontemporer Indonesia. Tahun 1956-1958 - belajar di Leiden, Belanda, untuk penelitian mengenai topik itu, tetapi tidak berhasil dilanjutkan. Kini ia tinggal di New York, dan menjadi Presiden Concord Environmental, : sebuah perusahaan yang memusatkan perhatian pada pengembangan energi angin di Dunia Ketiga.
