Researchers in many disciplines now face the formidable task of processing massive amounts of high-dimensional and highly structured data. Advances in data collection and information technologies have coupled with innovations in computing to make commonplace the task of learning from complex data. As a result, fundamental statistical research is being undertaken in a variety of different fields. Driven by the difficulty of these new problems, and fueled by the explosion of available computer power, highly adaptive, non-linear procedures are now essential components of modern ¿data analysis,¿ a term that we liberally interpret to include speech and pattern recognition, classification, data compression and image processing. The development of new, flexible methods combines advances from many sources, including approximation theory, numerical analysis, machine learning, signal processing and statistics. This volume collects 31 papers from a unique workshop designed to promote communication between these different disciplines. Held in the spring of 2001 at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, CA, the meeting brought together eminent experts from machine learning, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics, image analysis, signal processing, information theory, and optimization. In addition to presentations on fundamental methodological work, there were talks on complex applications like environmental modeling, network analysis, and bioinformatics. Statistics

Perception Based Data Mining And Decision Making In Economics And Finance written by Ildar Batyrshin and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-04-05 with Technology & Engineering categories.

The primary goal of this book is to present to the scientific and management communities a selection of applications using more recent Soft Computing (SC) and Computing with Words and Perceptions (CWP) models and techniques meant to solve the economics and financial problems. The selected examples could also serve as a starting point or as an opening out, in the SC and CWP techniques application to a wider range of problems in economics and finance. Decision making in the present world is becoming more and more sophisticated, time consuming and difficult for human beings who require more and more computational support. This book addresses the significant increase on research and applications of Soft Computing and Computing with Words and Perceptions for decision making in Economics and Finance in recent years. Decision making is heavily based on information and knowledge usually extracted from the analysis of large amounts of data. Data mining techniques enabled with the capability to integrate human experience could be used for a more realistic business decision support. Computing with Words and Perceptions introduced by Lotfi Zadeh, can serve as a basis for such extension of traditional data mining and decision making systems. Fuzzy logic as a main constituent of CWP gives powerful tools for modeling and processing linguistic information defined on numerical domain.

Decision trees have become one of the most powerful and popular approaches in knowledge discovery and data mining; it is the science of exploring large and complex bodies of data in order to discover useful patterns. Decision tree learning continues to evolve over time. Existing methods are constantly being improved and new methods introduced. This 2nd Edition is dedicated entirely to the field of decision trees in data mining; to cover all aspects of this important technique, as well as improved or new methods and techniques developed after the publication of our first edition. In this new edition, all chapters have been revised and new topics brought in. New topics include Cost-Sensitive Active Learning, Learning with Uncertain and Imbalanced Data, Using Decision Trees beyond Classification Tasks, Privacy Preserving Decision Tree Learning, Lessons Learned from Comparative Studies, and Learning Decision Trees for Big Data. A walk-through guide to existing open-source data mining software is also included in this edition. This book invites readers to explore the many benefits in data mining that decision trees offer:

This is the first comprehensive book dedicated entirely to the field of decision trees in data mining and covers all aspects of this important technique. Decision trees have become one of the most powerful and popular approaches in knowledge discovery and data mining, the science and technology of exploring large and complex bodies of data in order to discover useful patterns. The area is of great importance because it enables modeling and knowledge extraction from the abundance of data available. Both theoreticians and practitioners are continually seeking techniques to make the process more efficient, cost-effective and accurate. Decision trees, originally implemented in decision theory and statistics, are highly effective tools in other areas such as data mining, text mining, information extraction, machine learning, and pattern recognition. This book invites readers to explore the many benefits in data mining that decision trees offer:: Self-explanatory and easy to follow when compacted; Able to handle a variety of input data: nominal, numeric and textual; Able to process datasets that may have errors or missing values; High predictive performance for a relatively small computational effort; Available in many data mining packages over a variety of platforms; Useful for various tasks, such as classification, regression, clustering and feature selection . Sample Chapter(s). Chapter 1: Introduction to Decision Trees (245 KB). Chapter 6: Advanced Decision Trees (409 KB). Chapter 10: Fuzzy Decision Trees (220 KB). Contents: Introduction to Decision Trees; Growing Decision Trees; Evaluation of Classification Trees; Splitting Criteria; Pruning Trees; Advanced Decision Trees; Decision Forests; Incremental Learning of Decision Trees; Feature Selection; Fuzzy Decision Trees; Hybridization of Decision Trees with Other Techniques; Sequence Classification Using Decision Trees. Readership: Researchers, graduate and undergraduate students in information systems, engineering, computer science, statistics and management.

Classification, Parameter Estimation and State Estimation is a practical guide for data analysts and designers of measurement systems and postgraduates students that are interested in advanced measurement systems using MATLAB. 'Prtools' is a powerful MATLAB toolbox for pattern recognition and is written and owned by one of the co-authors, B. Duin of the Delft University of Technology. After an introductory chapter, the book provides the theoretical construction for classification, estimation and state estimation. The book also deals with the skills required to bring the theoretical concepts to practical systems, and how to evaluate these systems. Together with the many examples in the chapters, the book is accompanied by a MATLAB toolbox for pattern recognition and classification. The appendix provides the necessary documentation for this toolbox as well as an overview of the most useful functions from these toolboxes. With its integrated and unified approach to classification, parameter estimation and state estimation, this book is a suitable practical supplement in existing university courses in pattern classification, optimal estimation and data analysis. Covers all contemporary main methods for classification and estimation. Integrated approach to classification, parameter estimation and state estimation Highlights the practical deployment of theoretical issues. Provides a concise and practical approach supported by MATLAB toolbox. Offers exercises at the end of each chapter and numerous worked out examples. PRtools toolbox (MATLAB) and code of worked out examples available from the internet Many examples showing implementations in MATLAB Enables students to practice their skills using a MATLAB environment
