This book presents the fundamentals and advances in the field of data visualization and knowledge engineering, supported by case studies and practical examples. Data visualization and engineering has been instrumental in the development of many data-driven products and processes. As such the book promotes basic research on data visualization and knowledge engineering toward data engineering and knowledge. Visual data exploration focuses on perception of information and manipulation of data to enable even non-expert users to extract knowledge. A number of visualization techniques are used in a variety of systems that provide users with innovative ways to interact with data and reveal patterns. A variety of scalable data visualization techniques are required to deal with constantly increasing volume of data in different formats. Knowledge engineering deals with the simulation of the exchange of ideas and the development of smart information systems in which reasoning and knowledge play an important role. Presenting research in areas like data visualization and knowledge engineering, this book is a valuable resource for students, scholars and researchers in the field. Each chapter is self-contained and offers an in-depth analysis of real-world applications. It discusses topics including (but not limited to) spatial data visualization; biomedical visualization and applications; image/video summarization and visualization; perception and cognition in visualization; visualization taxonomies and models; abstract data visualization; information and graph visualization; knowledge engineering; human–machine cooperation; metamodeling; natural language processing; architectures of database, expert and knowledge-based systems; knowledge acquisition methods; applications, case studies and management issues: data administration issues and knowledge; tools for specifying and developing data and knowledge bases using tools based on communication aspects involved in implementing, designing and using KBSs in cyberspace; Semantic Web.

This monograph describes an innovative prototyping framework for data and knowledge intensive systems. The proposed approach will prove especially useful for advanced and research-oriented projects that aim to develop a traditional database perspective into fully-fledged advanced database approaches and knowledge engineering technologies. The book is organised in two parts. The first part, comprising chapters 1 to 4, provides an introduction to the concept of prototyping, to database and knowledge-based technologies, and to the main issues involved in the integration of data and knowledge engineering. The second part, comprising chapters 5 to 12, illustrates the proposed approach in technical detail. Audience: This volume will be of interest to researchers in the field of databases and knowledge engineering in general, and for software designers and knowledge engineers who aim to expand their expertise in data and knowledge intensive systems.

Is Data & Knowledge Engineering Required? Risk factors: what are the characteristics of Data & Knowledge Engineering that make it risky? How do we measure improved Data & Knowledge Engineering service perception, and satisfaction? What will drive Data & Knowledge Engineering change? Is the Data & Knowledge Engineering scope manageable? Defining, designing, creating, and implementing a process to solve a challenge or meet an objective is the most valuable role... In EVERY group, company, organization and department. Unless you are talking a one-time, single-use project, there should be a process. Whether that process is managed and implemented by humans, AI, or a combination of the two, it needs to be designed by someone with a complex enough perspective to ask the right questions. Someone capable of asking the right questions and step back and say, 'What are we really trying to accomplish here? And is there a different way to look at it?' This Self-Assessment empowers people to do just that - whether their title is entrepreneur, manager, consultant, (Vice-)President, CxO etc... - they are the people who rule the future. They are the person who asks the right questions to make Data & Knowledge Engineering investments work better. This Data & Knowledge Engineering All-Inclusive Self-Assessment enables You to be that person. All the tools you need to an in-depth Data & Knowledge Engineering Self-Assessment. Featuring 702 new and updated case-based questions, organized into seven core areas of process design, this Self-Assessment will help you identify areas in which Data & Knowledge Engineering improvements can be made. In using the questions you will be better able to: - diagnose Data & Knowledge Engineering projects, initiatives, organizations, businesses and processes using accepted diagnostic standards and practices - implement evidence-based best practice strategies aligned with overall goals - integrate recent advances in Data & Knowledge Engineering and process design strategies into practice according to best practice guidelines Using a Self-Assessment tool known as the Data & Knowledge Engineering Scorecard, you will develop a clear picture of which Data & Knowledge Engineering areas need attention. Your purchase includes access details to the Data & Knowledge Engineering self-assessment dashboard download which gives you your dynamically prioritized projects-ready tool and shows your organization exactly what to do next. This monograph describes a methodology for the design of knowledge-based systems. A knowledge-based system contains knowledge as well as information and data. The information and data in such a system can be modelled and imple mented as a database. The knowledge in such a system can be implemented either in a programming language or in an expert systems shell. This methodology has two distinguishing features. First, it is "unified". A unified methodology repre sents the data, information and knowledge in a homogeneous manner, as well as the relationships between them. Second, the methodology builds a maintenance mechanism into the design. In knowledge engineering terms, the representation used by this methodology to model knowledge bases applies equally to databases. In database terms, the representation used by this methodology to model databases applies equally to the database rules. The unified methodology unifies the design of the "knowledge base compo nent" and the "database component". "Unification" is achieved in five senses.
