Discover the Hidden Layers of Exhibition Politics Since the 1990s, the discourse on curating has often centered around the figure of the professional curator, viewing exhibition politics as a direct result of curatorial intent. However, contemporary shifts in institutional models, funding policies, and collection strategies have unveiled realms of curatorial practice that lie beyond the curator's control. This groundbreaking volume brings together essays by renowned art theorists and cultural scholars, moving beyond the traditional focus on the curator. It delves into the often-overlooked dimensions of exhibition politics, uncovering uncharted territories of influence and decision-making. Perfect for professionals, students, and anyone interested in the evolving landscape of art exhibitions, this book challenges conventional perspectives and offers invaluable insights into the complex interplay of curation, institutions, and external forces shaping the art world today. Key Features: In-depth essays from leading experts in art theory and cultural studies A fresh perspective on curatorial practices and exhibition politics A must-read for anyone exploring the dynamics of art institutions and curation

Ever since the nineteen-nineties, curatorial discourse has revolved around the figure of the professional curator. Consequently, curatorial politics is usually considered the direct result of a curator's deliberate acts and intentions. Now, however, new institutional models and modes of exhibition practice together with key shifts in funding and collecting strategies have revealed aspects of curatorial politics over which the exhibition-maker has little or no control. The present volume presents a series of essays by noted art theorists and cultural scientists that go beyond the perspective of the individual curator to reveal these previously unexplored levels of curatorial politics.

This issue of OnCurating consists of a variety of texts and interviews, which were developed out of interviews from participants connected to the Postgraduate programme in Curating (www.curating.org). Many of the authors and interviewees gave lectures and participated in the programme over the last four years, adding to the dialogue in the postgraduate programme, as well as other curators in the field. In the spirit of slowing down, in sometimes rather a hastily discourse, we would like to present them to a broad public, which engages with our main topics: politics of display, politics of site and politics of transfer and translation, topics which refer clearly to the research institution where the Postgraduate Programme in Curating is situated: the Institute Cultural Studies in the Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts. We see the curatorialdiscourse not primarily as a philosophical discourse with some practical outcomes. We are always interested in the power relations and politics, which structure the field. As curators and as researchers we have chosen the attitudethat practice and theory are intertwined profoundly, and both materialisations have the ability to do things with art and with words, to intervene, to highlight.ImprintIssue 22PublisherDorothee RichterCo-PublisherMichael BirchallEditorsNkule Mabaso and Dorothee RichterContributorsDorothee RichterMarco ScotiniPaul O NeillElena FilipovicMonan Slome and Joshua SimonAnke Hoffmann and Yvonne VolkartMirjam VaradinisRainer GanahlRene BlockRein WolfsAnton VidokleSasa NabergojInterviews conducted byGarance Massart-Blum and Milena Brendle-JohnKatharina Schendl and Ingela JohanssonNkule MabasoLindsey SharmanSylvia Ruttimann and Karin SeinsothJill KeiserMelanie and Jeannine HerrmannGarance Massart-Blum and Amber HickeyGraphic Design Biotop 3000Supported by Postgraduate Programme in Curating, Institute Cultural Studies, Department Cultural Analysis, Zurich Universityof the Arts www.curating.org

Comradeshipcollects 16 essays by the forward-thinking Slovenian curator, museum director and scholar Zdenka Badovinac (born 1958). Appointed director of Ljubljana's Museum of Modern Art in 1993 in the wake of Slovenian independence, Badovinac has become an influential voice in international conversations rethinking the geopolitics of art after the fall of communism. She is a ferocious critic of unequal negotiations between East and West and a leading historian of the avant-garde art that emerged in socialist and post-socialist countries at the end of the last century. One of the longest-serving and most prominent museum directors in the region, Badovinac has pioneered radical institutional forms to create a museum responsive to the complexities of the past, and commensurate with the demands of the present. Collecting writing from disparate and hard-to-find sources, as well as new work, this book offers a transformative perspective on a major thinker. It is a crucial handbook of alternative approaches to curating and institution-building in the 21st century. A dialogue between Badovinac and art historian J. Myers-Szupinska introduces her history and ideas. Comradeshipis the third book in the series Perspectives in Curatingby Independent Curators International. "Whip smart, politically astute, curatorially inventive: Zdenka Badovinac is nothing less than the most progressive and intellectually rigorous female museum director in Europe. This anthology includes key essays accompanying her series of brilliant exhibitions in Ljubljana, and is essential reading for anyone interested in the differences between former East and former West. For anyone seeking curatorial alternatives to the neoliberal museum model of relentless expansion and dumbed-down blockbusters, Badovinac is a galvanizing inspiration." -Claire Bishop, author of Artificial Hells

"'Thinking contemporary curating' is the first publication to comprehensively explore what is distinctive about contemporary curatorial thought. In five essays, art historian, critic, and theorist Terry Smith surveys the international landscape of current discourse; explores a number of exhibitions that show contemporaneity in present, recent, and post art; describes the enormous growth world-wide of exhibitionary infrastructure and the instability that haunts it; re-examines the phenomenon of artist-curators and curator-artists; and assesses a number of key tendencies in curating - such as the reimagined museum, the expanded exhibition, historicization and recuration, infrastructural activism, and engaged spectatorship - as responses to contemporary conditions." -- book cover.
