Afro Cuban Traditional Music And Transculturation written by Nolan Warden and has been published by VDM Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with History categories.

How are new musical traditions formed? This is the central question guiding this book on an Afro-Cuban ceremony sometimes called cajón pa' los mu-er-tos, a spirit-possession ritual that has been developed in Cuba over the past few decades. Cajón ceremonies are deftly sculpted from a wealth of religious influences including Santería, Palo, Espiritismo, and Catholicism. Grupo Cuero y Cajón, the case study for this book, provide insight into how songs and rhythms are created for these ceremonies while also bringing together older separate traditions into a new whole. This process of transculturation re-quires preservation and innovation but also shows musicians as integral to the creation of religious practices. As the first work in any language to study Cajón ceremonies, this book documents the songs used in the ceremonies and the eclectic drum rhythms that accompany them. This book is geared towards scholars in the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, and religious stu-dies, but will also be of interest to the general reader wan-ting to learn more about Afro-American culture. Three CD's and a DVD to ac-company this book can be found at the author's website: www.nolanwarden.com.

Cuban Convents In The Age Of Enlightened Reform 1761 1807 written by John James Clune and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with History categories.

Catholicism underwent momentous change as it transitioned to the modern era and the relatively new colonial environments of North America and the Caribbean. Critical to this evolution was the role of women in religion. John J. Clune Jr. examines the impact of the eighteenth-century European Enlightenment on the lives of nuns in colonial Cuba and New Orleans, both crucial centers of Catholicism where women had significant influence. Only recently have scholars begun to give attention to the importance of female religious life in the Spanish Empire. Clune illustrates the changing attitudes toward convents in the eighteenth century by contrasting the Clares, Dominicans, and Carmelites of Havana with the Ursulines of New Orleans (and later of Cuba). Built upon research in the archives of Spain, Cuba, Louisiana, and Texas, Clune acknowledges the importance of female religious life in the Spanish Empire and demonstrates that the decline in prestige of female religious orders in Latin America began not with Vatican II in the mid-twentieth century but with enlightened reform during the reigns of Spanish kings Charles III and Charles IV.
