This important book offers unique insights into crime and its prevention in retailing. It is the first comparative study of crime and nuisance in town centres and shopping centres. The book contributes directly to the current debate about the vitality and viability of high-street shopping. It discusses critically the use and effectiveness of a range of security options, including the role of security guards and the 'privatization' of policing in the retail sector. A detailed examination is made of the burgeoning use of closed circuit television, something which is contrasted with the lack of information about its effectiveness. This timely and major contribution is of interest to retailers, town-centre and shopping-centre managers, the private security industry and police officers, as well as academics and students.

This engaging new textbook presents a comprehensive, nuanced and multidimensional perspective on global crime and its governance. As global criminal activity becomes increasingly sophisticated and elusive, so the means to counter it must adapt. Every day our news media is dominated by incidents that span countries and continents, often presented as an all-encompassing threat orchestrated by societal outsiders. If not in the news, global crime is sensationalised in our film and television industry, and it can be difficult to gain a true understanding of what global crime is and how it is combated. Featuring the latest research and informed by a wide range of theoretical perspectives, this text masterfully makes sense of a range of issues from global environmental crime and human trafficking, to the global trade in drugs and cybercrime. This pathbreaking text analyses why global crime is important, the obstacles faced in countering it and accounts for the difficulties in securing cooperation across states. Comprehensive and accessible, this authoritative textbook is the perfect companion for students and scholars who are interested in the still evolving issue of international relations and global politics.

The unequal division of power, income, social, and cultural capital is reflected in the field of security. This results in an unequal distribution of security in our society. In this book, the research unit Social Analysis of Security (SVA) presents contributions on the theme of inequality and exclusion mechanisms in the field of security. The book describes, explains, and observes the social effects, starting from an explicit empirical research attitude. From a methodological point of view, it looks for a balance between quantitative and qualitative research methods. Social Analysis of Security is divided into the following three sections. 1) 'Financial, Economic, and Ecological Crime' is a domain where characteristics of inequality are dominant and which has been an under-researched topic for a long time. But, over the last decade, an increasing interest can be observed. This section's contributions deal with different issues, such as conflict resolution in the pharmaceutical sector, transnational environmental crime in the trafficking of e-waste and illegal timber, and the perceptions of corruption by public opinion. 2) 'Crime, Security, and Trust' investigates the causes of criminal behavior and attitudes from a contextual perspective, with special attention for unequal socio-ecological or environmental influences, asking questions as: How do neighborhood disadvantages impact on individual involvement in offending or on the environmental spread of collective efficacy and fear of crime? 3) 'Public and Private Policing' looks at different social reactions to security phenomena. This final section of the book analyzes policies concerning insecurity, such as federal and local security policy, reactions to new security initiatives, the blurring of boundaries between police and other instances, and alternative conflict settlements.

Ports are the vital hubs of the maritime transport industry, and crucial to the flow of global trade. The protection of this global supply chain from crime and terrorism is a fundamental objective of port security, and is a landscape beset by new challenges and changes post 9/11. Building on multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork in two major European ports, Yarin Eski discusses how operational policing and security realities and identities are established, and examines how industrial commercialization has aggravated security issues. Policing, Port Security and Crime Control offers a compelling empirically balanced account of the attitudes and practices of port police officers and security officers, exploring the everyday realities and ambitions of these street-level professionals as they seek to (re)establish a meaningful occupational identity. In doing so, this book presents a criminological understanding of the way that security questions and procedures are integrated into the daily lives of those that protect the industrial port sites, where they themselves must interrupt the global supply chain in order to defend it. Exploring topics such as port security management, multi-agency policing, port theft, drug trafficking, human smuggling and terrorism, this book offers a major contribution to the growing literature on transnational crime and security and is one of the first to offer an ethnographic approach to port security. This book is interdisciplinary and will appeal to criminologists, sociologists, ethnographers and those engaged with policing and security studies, as well as professionals in the field of multi-agency policing, border control, security and governance of the port and wider maritime industry.

The pursuit of security is now central to the development of public policy and a driving force behind the spread of private policing. Just as new theoretical frameworks are needed to deal with the increasing tendency of crime control policies to focus on risk reduction, new forms of governance are also required to deal with the rapid growth of the private security industry. This volume brings together a wide range of contributions from leading scholars in the field and includes international and comparative perspectives on the challenges posed by the rise of the 'security society'.
