This book assesses the human rights condition in the People's Republic of China during 1993-94, focusing on how abuses have engendered difficulties for Bejing in international relations. It considers changes in the political and legal systems and Communist ideology (more correctly, its demise) in its appraisal. These, the authors contend, are causative factors of human rights abuses and need to be understood to put the human rights situation in its proper perspective. Such matters as crime, forced labor, and executions are examined in detail to deliniate the worst kinds of human rights abuses as well as current trends. Dissidents, religious advocates, and intellectuals are also a focus of attention. Copublished with the East Asia Research Institute.

This study investigates the entire process of deviant labeling under the leadership of Chairman Mao between 1950 and 1978. Through the use of life history materials that include autobiographies and memoirs published in both English and Chinese, the causes of the labeling, the lives of the deviants, and the consequences of deviant labels on individuals, family members, and significant others are thoroughly analyzed. It documents the impacts of labeling on the self-concept of deviants and the creation of a new socially and politically defined deviant class, the 'enemies of the people' in Mao's China.

To the consternation of the haves, some humans continue to insist that they are entitled to live as humans. While it is perhaps a question of philosophy what constitutes a human right, it is more clear what constitutes an abuse of human rights. The world has never been short on abusers and is surely not now. Only the names and faces have changed over time. The powerful tend to be the abusers and the weak the abused. Being aware of the abuses can at least focus light on them and perhaps serve as a proactive response. This bibliography presents hundreds of citations of human right violations under the categories: Basic Human Rights; North America; Latin America; Europe; Asia; Middle East and Africa. Access is provided via Title, Author and Subject Indexes.
