Networks of land managed for conservation across different tenures have rapidly increased in number (and popularity) in Australia over the past two decades. These include iconic large-scale initiatives such as Gondwana Link, the Great Eastern Ranges Initiative, Habitat 141°, and the South Australian NatureLinks, as well as other, landscape-scale approaches such as Biosphere Reserves and Conservation Management Networks. David Lindenmayer is a Research Professor in the Center for Resource & Environmental Studies at The Australian National University in Canberra. He runs six large-scale landscape studies in south-eastern Australia and has written 18 books and 260 scientific articles on conservation biology, landscape ecology, wildlife biology, forest ecology and management, and woodland conservation and management. Richard Hobbs is an Australian Professorial Fellow in the School of Environmental Science at Murdoch University in Perth, Australia. He has broad interests spanning restoration ecology, conservation biology, landscape ecology and vegetation management. He has published 17 books and 266 scientific articles in these areas of research and is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science.

The publication also includes the proceedings of a side event at the 12th World Forestry Congress (Quebec City, 2003) whose primary objective was to introduce the proposed framework and to seek international & national perspectives on it. The response to this presentation is organized around four questions that sought to determine the comprehensiveness, utility, and practicality of implementation of the framework and its compatibility with other reporting processes.
