Conceptual modeling can be considered as lying at the confluence of the three main aspects of information technology applications –– the world of the stakeholders and users, the world of the developers, and the technologies available to them. C- ceptual models provide abstractions of various aspects related to the development of systems, such as the application domain, user needs, database design, and software specifications. These models are used to analyze and define user needs and system requirements, to support communications between stakeholders and developers, to provide the basis for systems design, and to document the requirements for and the design rationale of developed systems. Because of their role at the junction of usage, development, and technology, c- ceptual models can be very important to the successful development and deployment of IT applications. Therefore, the research and development of methods, techniques, tools and languages that can be used in the process of creating, maintaining, and using conceptual models is of great practical and theoretical importance. Such work is c- ducted in academia, research institutions, and industry. Conceptual modeling is now applied in virtually all areas of IT applications, and spans varied domains such as organizational information systems, systems that include specialized data for spatial, temporal, and multimedia applications, and biomedical applications.

Conceptual modeling is about describing the semantics of software applications at a high level of abstraction in terms of structure, behavior, and user interaction. This book is based on a symposium to celebrate Eric Yu, the inventor of the i* framework, held on the occasion of his retirement and collocated with the 31st IEEE International Requirements Engineering Conference. The notion of social modeling emerged in the mid-nineties as a powerful conceptual approach to intricately analyze and specify complex social ecosystems, wherein strategic actors collaborate and depend on each other in order to attain their goals. The i* framework was designed precisely for this purpose, rapidly establishing itself as the de facto standard in the requirements engineering and information systems communities. The invited chapters, which were all written by highly acclaimed researchers, aim to give testimony to the impact of Eric’s work during the last 30 years of research and practice in requirements engineering (RE) and at the same time reflect on current development as well as future prospects. FOIS is the flagship conference of the International Association for Ontology and its Applications, a non-profit organization which promotes interdisciplinary research and international collaboration at the intersection of philosophical ontology, linguistics, logic, cognitive science, and computer science. This book presents the papers delivered at FOIS 2023, the 13th edition of the Formal Ontology in Information Systems conference. The event was held as a sequentially-hybrid event, face-to-face in Sherbrooke, Canada, from 17 to 20 July 2023, and online from 18 to 20 September 2023. In total, 62 articles from 19 different countries were submitted, out of which 25 were accepted for inclusion in the conference and for publication; corresponding to an acceptance rate of 40 percent. The contributions are separated into the book’s three sections: (1) Foundational ontological issues; (2) Methodological issues around the development, alignment, verification and use of ontologies; and (3) Domain ontologies and ontology-based applications. In these sections, ontological aspects from a wide variety of fields are covered, primarily from various engineering domains including cybersecurity, manufacturing, petroleum engineering, and robotics, but also extending to the humanities, social sciences, medicine, and dentistry. A noticeable trend among the contributions in this edition of the conference is the recognition that improving the tools to analyze, align, and improve ontologies is of paramount importance in continuing to advance the field of formal ontology. The book will be of interest to all formal and applied ontology researchers, and to those who use formal ontologies and information systems as part of their work.
