In recent years, globalization of the market place has presented new challenges for co-operative working. Organizations must assemble team members having varying skills and experiences, in widely dispersed locations dealing with several issues such as overall strategy, analysis, design, marketing, production and administration. CSCW represents a field of high activity in terms of new tools and technological advances. As well as descriptions of a selection of tools available in the marketplace, details of practical experience and suggestions for future development from those involved in the design, use and management of facilities for CSCW are included in this text.

Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) examines the possibilities and effects of technological support for humans involved in group communication and work processes... attention has been devoted to how humans might interact, not so much with computers, but with each other through computer based technology. Based on papers delivered at a conference topics are dealt with under six sections: the concept of CSCW; generic models and configurable systems; empirical studies of cooperative work and system use; infrastructure for CSCW; CSCW and design: principles and practices.

The book deals with the bargaining aspect of computer supported cooperative work. Time-management of working groups has to include personal time- and task preferences of the group members. Therefore the book deals with various issues of work distribution, in particular with conflict handling and its technical support. The book offers an interdisciplinary treatment of time aspects in working groups. Besides theoretical investigation from several different scientific fields empirical case-studies are presented.

This is the book reprint of my Ph.D. thesis. Abstract: The area of research on Computer-Supported Co-operative Work (CSCW) has been attractingcontributions from various disciplines such as Computer Science, Sociology, Management 5Science and Information Systems. The cross-fertilisation of different research approaches to ifoster the understanding of the social contexts of design and use of CSCW technologies is iseen as one of the more important distinctive characteristics of this recent research area. iThe main objective of the present work is to contribute to such cross-fertilisation byexploring the use of Soft Systems Methodology as an action-research methodology. The lresearch consisted in planning and undertaking research with SSM, which was usefullyemployed to materialise the learning process that was experienced during the study of theadoption of groupware applications by several case organisations. The present work cannot be described as conventional case study research. Instead, itpurposefully concentrates in the self-learning process that constitutes the whole of theresearch, which is captured in the form of narratives, rather than day-to-day content from thefieldwork. Therefore, the phenomenological contributions that are offered differ from thosethat could be expected from mainstream qualitative research and seek to make amethodological contribution in what concerns action-research with the use of Soft SystemsMethodology. An innovative aspect of the present research consisted in the application of SSM to designelectronic meetings; the learning extracted, in the form of reflections from practice, can bepotentially relevant to groupware designers, particularly for those who are concerned inbridging the gap between groupware-design and groupware-in-use. The conclusions point tothe need to rethink the meaning of 'technology' not as something that supports group work, but as a form of representing and enacting purposeful group processes in particular situations

This book reports research conducted in the ESPRIT project PECOS, which investigated the requirements for effective CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) with special reference to cooperation among organisations in large projects. It indicates commercial areas where CSCW technology can be applied, and examines such methodological issues as enterprise modelling, system architecture, and the incorporation of artificial intelligence techniques. PECOS studied two practical contexts. The first was the management of a complex industrial project, the construction of a high-speed train for the Italian railway, which required cooperation among four private companies. The second was the design of an information system for water management in the Lombardy region, which required cooperation among several different branches of public administration.fhese contexts were analysed, applying techniques of enterprise modelling, in order to identify requirements for CSCW systems. The composition of the book is as follows. Chapter 1 presents some highlights of the vast literature on cooperation, including results from psycholOgy, sociology, management science, linguistics, and artificial intelligence. Chapter 2 reviews the much shorter history of CSCW, with reference to a catalogue of existing systems given in an appendix at the end of the book. The next four chapters contain our original findings.
