An accessible introduction to computer systems and architecture Anyone aspiring to more advanced studies in computer-related fields must gain an understanding of the two parallel aspects of the modern digital computer: programming methodology and the underlying machine architecture. The uniquely integrated approach of Computer Architecture and Organization connects the programmer’s view of a computer system with the associated hardware and peripheral devices, providing a thorough, three-dimensional view of what goes on inside the machine. Covering all the major topics normally found in a first course in computer architecture, the text focuses on the essentials including the instruction set architecture (ISA), network-related issues, and programming methodology. Using “real world” case studies to put the information into perspective, the chapters examine: Data representation Arithmetic The instruction set architecture Datapath and Control Languages and the machine Memory Buses and peripherals Networking and communication Advanced computer architecture A valuable feature of this book is the use of ARC, a subset of the SPARC processor, for an instruction set architecture. A platform-independent ARCTools suite, containing an assembler and simulator for the ARC ISA, that supports the examples used in the book is available. Better yet, the content is supplemented by online problem sets available through WileyPlus. Balanced and thoughtfully designed for use as either a classroom text or self-study guide, Computer Architecture and Organization: An Integrated Approach will put you solidly on track for advancing to higher levels in computer-related disciplines. About the Author: MILES MURDOCCAserves as the President and CEO of Internet Institute USA (IIUSA), a private postsecondary information technology (IT) school specializing in networking, operating systems, IP telephony, programming, and security. Previously, Dr. Murdocca has been a computer science faculty member at Rutgers University and a research scientist at AT&T Bell Laboratories working in computer architecture, networking, and digital optical computing. He is the author of A Digital Design Methodology for Optical Computing and Principles of Computer Architecture and a contributing author to Computer Systems Design and Architecture, Second Edition as well as the author of dozens of professional papers and patents relating to information technology. VINCE HEURING is an associate professor and acting chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has been at the university since 1984, and prior to that he spent three years at the University of Cincinnati. Professor Heuring’s research encompasses computer architectures and programming language design implementation. He and his colleague, Harry Jordan, designed and built the world’s first stored program optical computer, “SPOC.”

Takes a unique systems approach to programming and architecture of the VAX Using the VAX as a detailed example, the first half of this book offers a complete course in assembly language programming. The second describes higher-level systems issues in computer architecture. Highlights include the VAX assembler and debugger, other modern architectures such as RISCs, multiprocessing and parallel computing, microprogramming, caches and translation buffers, and an appendix on the Berkeley UNIX assembler.

In shaping the current version of this book, a number of goals were set. The first was that the book be independent of any particular computer or programming language, but be compatible with them all. This book will be useful in any computer environment. The second was that it correspond well to a generally agreed on portion of the Computer Science curriculum. The book is aimed toward the material recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery for a second course in Computer Science. The third, and by far the easiest as it turned out, was to make the book both substantive and entertaining.

High-Level Language Computer Architecture offers a tutorial on high-level language computer architecture, including von Neumann architecture and syntax-oriented architecture as well as direct and indirect execution architecture. Design concepts of Japanese-language data processing systems are discussed, along with the architecture of stack machines and the SYMBOL computer system. The conceptual design of a direct high-level language processor is also described. Comprised of seven chapters, this book first presents a classification of high-level language computer architecture according to the proximity of the machine language and the programming language. This classification gives four types: von Neumann architecture, syntax-oriented architecture, indirect execution architecture, and direct execution architecture. In order to illustrate the possible evolution of computer architecture, design concepts of Japanese-language data processing systems are chosen as an example. Subsequent chapters focus on the syntax-oriented architecture; the historical SYMBOL computer system which makes use of an indirect execution architecture; and design concepts of direct-execution architecture for the ALGOL 60 language. The final chapter describes the architecture for the processor for an APL subset. This monograph will be of interest to specialists in electronics and computer science.

Scripting Cultures: Architectural Design and Programming With scripting, computer programming becomes integral to the digital design process. It provides unique opportunities for innovation, enabling the designer to customise the software around their own predilections and modes of working. It liberates the designer by automating many routine aspects and repetitive activities of the design process, freeing-up the designer to spend more time on design thinking. Software that is modified through scripting offers a range of speculations that are not possible using the software only as the manufacturers intended it to be used. There are also significant economic benefits to automating routines and coupling them with emerging digital fabrication technologies, as time is saved at the front-end and new file-to-factory protocols can be taken advantage of. Most significantly perhaps, scripting as a computing program overlay enables the tool user (designer) to become the new tool maker (software engineer). Though scripting is not new to design, it is only recently that it has started to be regarded as integral to the designer's skill set rather than a technical speciality. Many designers are now aware of its potential, but remain hesitant. This book treats scripting not only as a technical challenge, requiring clear description, guidance and training, but also, and more crucially, answers the question as to why designers should script in the first place, and what the cultural and theoretical implications are. This book: Investigates the application of scripting for productivity, experimentation and design speculation. Offers detailed exploration of the scripting of Gaudí's final realised design for the Sagrada Família, leading to file-to-factory digital fabrication. Features projects and commentary from over 30 contemporary scripting leaders, including Evan Douglis, Marc Fornes, Sawako Kaijima, Achim Menges, Neri Oxman, Casey Reas and Hugh Whitehead of Foster + Partners.
