Contemporary Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) is a comprehensive, one-volume work written by leading international figures in the field focusing on a wide range of theoretical and methodological issues. It explains key terms and concepts, synthesizes the research literature and explores the implications of new and emerging technologies. The book includes chapters on key aspects for CALL such as design, teacher education, evaluation, teaching online and testing, as well as new trends such as social media. The volume takes a broad look at CALL and explores how a variety of theoretical approaches have emerged as influences including socio-cultural theory, constructivism and new literacy studies. A glossary of terms to support those new to CALL as well as to allow those already engaged in the field to deepen their existing knowledge is also provided. Contemporary Computer-Assisted Language Learning is essential reading for postgraduate students of language teaching as well as researchers in related fields involved in the study of computer-assisted learning.

Computer Assisted Language Learning has created a growing interest among educators, teachers and researchers in developing and using software. Moreover, computers have facilitated the teaching and testing procedures of certain skills like speaking and listening, adopted for training large groups of learners. These skills are no doubt taught in conventional language classrooms but not always tested. The computer with multimedia technology makes it possible for us to test the proficiency levels of these skills also. This is because multimedia can present information effectively in an integrated format using text, graphics, sound, animation and video. The present study aims at finding out the pedagogical significance of the use of computers along with that of tailor made software meant for language teaching and testing. Five null hypotheses were formulated that enabled the researcher to analyse the results obtained from experiments conducted.

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2011 im Fachbereich Informatik - Sonstiges, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: The use of technology in language learning and teaching programs is very essential. The present study was set out to investigate the effects of E-mail writing on improving EFL learners' written communication and autonomy. The participants of the study were 44 female and male sophomore students, by the age of 18-21 who were randomly assigned to the two groups of experimental and control. Each group consisted of 22 participants. The course lasted for 5 months, and was held in one of the universities in Urmia, Iran. The first group (experimental group) sent their assignments through emails in addition to the traditional class activities but the second group (control group) had the traditional class and assignments were handed in hard copies. For measuring the written communication, a pre-test and post-test was administered to both groups. The pre- and post-tests were criterion reference tests (recognition tests and productive writing activities), based on the materials covered in the class. The pre- and post-tests were parallel recognition tests and productive writing tasks. In order to measure the participants' level of autonomy, the Learner Autonomy Questionnaire, developed by Kashefian (2002), with 40 items in a five-point Likert scale was given to them. The obtained data was analyzed through the SPSS software. The results of this study will be useful for language teachers, learners, administrators and material developers.
