In developing this book, we decided to emphasize applications and to provide methods for solving problems. As a result, we limited the mathematical devel opments and we tried as far as possible to get insight into the behavior of numerical methods by considering simple mathematical models. The text contains three sections. The first is intended to give the fundamen tals of most types of numerical approaches employed to solve fluid-mechanics problems. The topics of finite differences, finite elements, and spectral meth ods are included, as well as a number of special techniques. The second section is devoted to the solution of incompressible flows by the various numerical approaches. We have included solutions of laminar and turbulent-flow prob lems using finite difference, finite element, and spectral methods. The third section of the book is concerned with compressible flows. We divided this last section into inviscid and viscous flows and attempted to outline the methods for each area and give examples.

In its 3rd revised and extended edition the book offers an overview of the techniques used to solve problems in fluid mechanics on computers and describes in detail those most often used in practice. Included are advanced methods in computational fluid dynamics, like direct and large-eddy simulation of turbulence, multigrid methods, parallel computing, moving grids, structured, block-structured and unstructured boundary-fitted grids, free surface flows. The 3rd edition contains a new section dealing with grid quality and an extended description of discretization methods. The book shows common roots and basic principles for many different methods. The book also contains a great deal of practical advice for code developers and users; it is designed to be equally useful to beginners and experts. The issues of numerical accuracy, estimation and reduction of numerical errors are dealt with in detail, with many examples.

The present book – through the topics and the problems approach – aims at filling a gap, a real need in our literature concerning CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics). Our presentation results from a large documentation and focuses on reviewing the present day most important numerical and computational methods in CFD. Many theoreticians and experts in the field have expressed their - terest in and need for such an enterprise. This was the motivation for carrying out our study and writing this book. It contains an important systematic collection of numerical working instruments in Fluid Dyn- ics. Our current approach to CFD started ten years ago when the Univ- sity of Paris XI suggested a collaboration in the field of spectral methods for fluid dynamics. Soon after – preeminently studying the numerical approaches to Navier–Stokes nonlinearities – we completed a number of research projects which we presented at the most important inter- tional conferences in the field, to gratifying appreciation. An important qualitative step in our work was provided by the dev- opment of a computational basis and by access to a number of expert softwares. This fact allowed us to generate effective working programs for most of the problems and examples presented in the book, an - pect which was not taken into account in most similar studies that have already appeared all over the world.

Fluids, play an important role in environmental systems, appearing as surface water in rivers, lakes, and coastal regions or in the subsurface as well as in the atmosphere. Mechanics of environmental fluids is concerned with fluid motion, associated mass and heat transport in addition to deformation processes in subsurface systems. In this textbook the fundamental modelling approaches based on continuum mechanics for fluids in the environment are described, including porous media and turbulence. Numerical methods for solving the process governing equations and its object-oriented computer implementation are discussed and illustrated with examples. Finally the application of computer models in civil and environmental engineering is demonstrated.

As indicated in Vol. 1, the purpose of this two-volume textbook is to pro vide students of engineering, science and applied mathematics with the spe cific techniques, and the framework to develop skill in using them, that have proven effective in the various branches of computational fluid dy namics Volume 1 describes both fundamental and general techniques that are relevant to all branches of fluid flow. This volume contains specific tech niques applicable to the different categories of engineering flow behaviour, many of which are also appropriate to convective heat transfer. The contents of Vol. 2 are suitable for specialised graduate courses in the engineering computational fluid dynamics (CFD) area and are also aimed at the established research worker or practitioner who has already gained some fundamental CFD background. It is assumed that the reader is famil iar with the contents of Vol. 1. The contents of Vol. 2 are arranged in the following way: Chapter 11 de velops and discusses the equations governing fluid flow and introduces the simpler flow categories for which specific computational techniques are considered in Chaps. 14-18. Most practical problems involve computational domain boundaries that do not conveniently coincide with coordinate lines. Consequently, in Chap. 12 the governing equations are expressed in generalised curvilinear coordinates for use in arbitrary computational domains. The corresponding problem of generating an interior grid is considered in Chap. 13.
