Computational intelligence (CI), as an alternative to statistical and econometric approaches, has been applied to a wide range of economics and finance problems in recent years, for example to price forecasting and market efficiency. This book contains research ranging from applications in financial markets and business administration to various economics problems. Not only are empirical studies utilizing various CI algorithms presented, but so also are theoretical models based on computational methods. In addition to direct applications of computational intelligence, readers can also observe how these methods are combined with conventional analytical methods such as statistical and econometric models to yield preferred results. Chen, Wang, and Kuo have grouped the 12 contributions following their introductory chapter into applications of fuzzy logic, neural networks (including self-organizing maps and support vector machines), and evolutionary computation. All chapters were selected either by invitation or based on a careful selection and extension of best papers from the International Workshop on Computational Intelligence in Economics and Finance in 2005. Overall, the book offers researchers an excellent overview of current advances and applications of computational intelligence techniques to economics and finance problems.

Artificial Intelligence in Civil Engineering: Recent Advances provides a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in applying artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to solve complex civil engineering problems. Civil engineers today face challenges that demand not only safety and cost-effectiveness, but also sustainability and resilience against natural hazards. This volume demonstrates how AI offers powerful tools to meet these demands by transforming traditional engineering methodologies. The chapters present a broad spectrum of applications, including predicting shear wave velocity, slope stability, estimating uniaxial compressive strength of soils, optimization-based design of reinforced concrete retaining walls, structural control strategies for seismic resilience, and the integration of Building Information Modeling (BIM) with AI-driven solutions. Machine learning, deep learning, and metaheuristic algorithms are explored in detail, supported by real-world case studies and experimental data. By bridging theory with practice, the book highlights how AI enhances predictive accuracy, optimizes design processes, and reduces computational effort in engineering tasks. Researchers, graduate students, and practicing engineers will find this volume a timely reference, offering both methodological foundations and practical insights into AI-powered approaches that are reshaping the future of civil engineering.

As has been pointed out by several industrial game AI developers the lack of behavioral modularity across games and in-game tasks is detrimental for the development of high quality AI [605, 171]. An increasingly popular method for ad-hoc behavior authoring that eliminates the modularity limitations of FSMs and BTs is the utility-based AI approach which can be used for the design of control and decision making systems in games [425, 557]. Following this approach, instances in the game get assigned a particular utility function that gives a value for the importance of the particular instance [10, 169]. For instance, the importance of an enemy being present at a particular distance or the importance of an agent’s health being low in this particular context. Given the set of all utilities available to an agent and all the options it has, utility-based AI decides which is the most important option it should consider at this moment [426]. The utility-based approach is grounded in the utility theory of economics and is based on utility function design. The approach is similar to the design of membership functions in a fuzzy set. A utility can measure anything from observable objective data (e.g., enemy health) to subjective notions such as emotions, mood and threat. The various utilities about possible actions or decisions can be aggregated into linear or non-linear formulas and guide the agent to take decisions based on the aggregated utility. The utility values can be checked every n frames of the game. So while FSMs and BTs would examine one decision at a time, utility-based AI architectures
