Frontiers of Computational Fluid Dynamics 1994 Edited by D. A. Caughey Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA M. M. Hafez University of California, Davis, USA This book presents the current state of the art of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). It is dedicated to Antony Jameson, in appreciation of his contributions to this field. Recent achievements in the various disciplines which contribute to CFD are discussed, including grid generation and adaptation, finite-volume and finite-element methods, multi-dimensional upwind schemes and multigrid convergence acceleration techniques. Simulations of inviscid and viscous flows are covered for both compressible and incompressible flows, with emphasis on flow control or optimal shape design in fluid mechanics. The book consists of 29 contributed chapters, which are grouped in six sections, covering: Design and Optimization of Aerodynamic Configurations Unstructured Grid Techniques Solution of the Euler Equations Solution of the Navier—Stokes Equations Applications in Aerodynamics Applications in Hydrodynamics Throughout the book, various approaches are critically examined, and new directions toward more efficient and robust tools of analysis and design, to meet the high expectations facing CFD, are emphasized.

The success of CFD as a tool for the analysis of many fundamental and practical fluid dynamics problems justifies this publication which serves as a state-of-the-art reference, capturing the multidisciplinary spirit of CFD in SI in-depth articles. Together, they provide a comprehensive review of research on fluid flow, viscous flow (incompressible and compressible) and turbulence needs testing of previously advocated fundamental concepts and computer-based techniques. Findings from numerous international conferences are also shared.

In the spirit of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research's (AFOSR) initiative to promote University-Industry Collaborative Research, a collaborative project entitled, Hybrid Techniques in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has been executed by the National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center for Computational Field Simulation (NSF ERC) at Mississippi State University. The industrial participants include McDonnell Douglas Company, Boeing Company, and Teledyne Brown Engineering Company. The research and development activities of this effort are focused on the advancement of methodologies to increase the efficiency, quality, and productivity of an overall CFD simulation associated with geometrically complex configurations. The progress realized in the aforementioned development is presented in this final report. Progress concerning efforts designed to improve the efficiency and applicability of the CFD to geometrically complex configurations utilizing hybrid techniques is presented. This progress has been brought about through the developments and enhancements in hybrid grid generation methodology and solution algorithms for associated Euler and Navier-Stokes equations. In particular, the enhancement of the two and three dimensional hybrid grid system and CFD simulation solver is presented. The development of the three dimensional hybrid grid system and solution system allowing viscous effects with complex examples is presented to demonstrate the success of these methodologies.

Volume 2 of this significant work presents previously unpublished cutting-edge lectures from the Third French-Russian Workshop on Fluid Dynamics held in Tashkent in April 1995. Reflecting the Workshop?s main themes, this book particularly focuses on: expermental investigation of unsteady separated flow, 3D configurations, laminar and transitional flows, turbulent shock, shock interaction in hypersonic flow, pressure pulsation in separated flows and jets and high enthalpy flows using wind tunnels. modeling of free surface flows, natural gas combustion, vortical gas flows and acoustic processes in complex channels, non-equilibrium hypersonic viscous flows, wall law for fluids and compressible fluid jets with vortex zones. theoretical predictions of aerodynamic performances with analyses of supersonic combustion, detonation, and sumulation of reactive mixing layer. solution methods for quasilinear parabolic equations and other calculations including incompressible Navier Stokes equations and parabolic equations by Monte-Carlo methods. numerical algorithms for the simulation of atmospheric gas dynamics, kinetic schemes for viscous gas dynamic flows and evolutionary algorithms for complex optimization problems. This book will be of particular interest to all engineers and research scientists in Fluid Dynamics, Aeronautics, Aerospace and Mechanical or Applied Mathematics.
