The latter is achieved by using special hardware to invalidate stale cache blocks in time independent of the number of such blocks. Cache words are allowed to become inconsistent with memory as long as the compiler decides it is safe to do so. The latest of the three schemes also handles multi-level cache hierarchies and does not require the 'inclusion principle' to be satisfied. The inherent cost of maintaining coherence in parallel programs is also estimated. A qualitative comparison of various compiler-directed schemes is given."
