In the US and EU, legal analysis in competition cases is conducted on a case-by-case approach. This approach assesses each particular practice for both its legality and its welfare effects. While this analytic method has the merits of 'getting the result right' by, inter alia, reducing error costs in antitrust adjudication, it comes at a cost of certainty, predictability and clarity in the legal principles which govern antitrust law. This is a rule of law concern. This is the first book to explore this tension between Europe's 'More Economic Approach', the US's Rule of Reason, and the Rule of Law. The tension manifests itself in the assumptions in and choice of analytic method; the institutional agents driving this effects based approach and their competency to use and assess the results of the methodology they demand; and, the nature and stability of the legal principles used in modern effects-based competition analysis. The book forcefully argues that this approach to competition law represents a threat to the rule of law. Competition, Effects and Predictability will be of interest to European and American competition law scholars and practitioners, legal historians, policy makers and members of the judiciary.

We examine how product market competition affects firm cash flows and stock returns in industry booms and busts. In competitive industries, we find that high industry-level stock-market valuation, investment and new financing are followed by sharply lower operating cash flows and abnormal stock returns. We also find that analyst estimates are positively biased and returns comove more when industry valuations are high in competitive industries. In concentrated industries these relations are weak and generally insignificant. Our results suggest that when industry stock-market valuations are high, firms and investors in competitive industries do not fully internalize the negative externality of industry competition on cash flows and stock returns.

The service life of Virginia's concrete bridge decks is generally controlled by chloride-induced corrosion of the reinforcing steel as a result of the application of winter maintenance deicing salts. A chloride corrosion model accounting for the variable input parameters using Monte Carlo resampling was developed. The model was validated using condition surveys from 10 Virginia bridge decks built with bare steel. The influence of changes in the construction specifications of w/c = 0.47 and 0.45 and w/cm = 0.45 and a cover depth increase from 2 to 2.75 inches was determined. Decks built under the specification of w/cm = 0.45 (using slag or fly ash) and a 2.75 inch cover depth have a maintenance free service life of greater than 100 years, regardless of the type of reinforcing steel. Galvanized, MMFX-2, and stainless steel, in order of increasing reliability of a service life of greater than 100 years, will provide a redundant corrosion protection system. Life cycle cost analyses were conducted for polymer concrete and portland cement based overlays as maintenance activities. The most economical alternative is dependent on individual structure conditions. The study developed a model and computer software that can be used to determine the time to first repair and rehabilitation of individual bridge decks taking into account the time for corrosion initiation, time from initiation to cracking, and time for corrosion damage to propagate to a state requiring repair.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Computer Science - Programming, grade: 1,0, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) (Institute of Economics (ECON) - Statistical Methods and Econometrics), language: English, abstract: In this thesis, I address this heuristic crisis with the development of a fully-automated machine learning framework capable of optimizing arbitrary econometric state space ARIMA methods in a completely data-driven manner. With this framework, I compare the predictions of a model portfolio consisting of all 8 possible combinations of a standard ARIMA, a seasonal SARIMA, an ARIMAX model with socio-economic variables, and an ARIMAX model with conflict indicators of neighboring countries as exogenous predictors. In addition, each model is examined on a monthly and quarterly periodicity. By comparing the out-of-sample prediction errors, I find that this approach can beat the no-change heuristic in the country-level one-year ahead prediction of the log change of conflict fatalities in all metrics used, including the TADDA score. While the urgency for early detection of crises is increasing, truly reliable conflict prediction systems are still not in place, despite the emergence of better data sources and the use of state-of-the art machine learning algorithms in recent years. Researchers still face the rarity of conflict onset events, which makes it difficult for machine learning-based systems to detect crucial escalation or de-escalation signals. As a result, prediction models can be outperformed by naive heuristics, such as the no-change model, which leads to a lack of confidence and thus limited practical usability.
